No idea untill we know what the team is.
Professional managers in the game say there isn't much difference in the level between league one and two.
Probably like the rest of us on here i don't have enough knowledge of league two to make a call like this.
The fact is we were comfortably relegated from league one.
Current squad taking into consideration signings, players who have left and players who have not signed a new contract, we are weaker than last season.

Is this professional managers that have managed in them two divisions?

Of course there is a difference. The better players in the Championship look for a move to the Prem. The better Division 3 players look for a move to the Championship. The better players in Division 4 look for a move to Division 3. That is because they would earn more money as well as play at a higher level against better players.

IIRC if you take out the top 3 attendances in Division 4 last season all the rest of the clubs averaged less than half of the attendances of Division 3. No other club even reached the average for Division 3. More than half the clubs averaged less than 4,000. Lower income means lower budget.

And as for the quality of the football? You will be in for a surprise. Don't expect to come against passing football much. We will have away games where we outnumber the home support. We will go to grounds that make HR look like a luxury ground. There are clubs that survive on attendances that we can take to away games. They hope to get clubs like us on a day that we can take a good following.

At the moment unless we sign a striker then no.
Sign the right striker then yes.

We are still missing a goalscorer. If we manage to sign one then automatic promotion should be on. We already have a decent side for Division 4. But even if we don't manage to sign one mid table would be a disaster. It should be playoffs minimum.

Agree - the other thing I would add to this thread is that I think we will be ok at home, it is winning enough away games to stay the right end of the table that bothers me more.

Is it only me that's getting really inpatient/buzzing for the new season?

Nope! Me too! Mind, I am excited every pre-season. Do think we are going to have a good un this time though and should be right up there challenging.

i think we will be right up there.
base of squad in place before pre-season even starts.
Going to be down to the job Robins does as much as the signings brought in.
Not sure how effective the loan market is in league 2. top 6 sides last year didn't seem to use many (average 3 for season). so getting main squad in placing before season starts seems to be key.
Also goals scoring seems to be the key factor rather defence in as much as most of the top 12/13 sides conceded similar amounts of goals.

We will be three points clear at the top by Christmas, with a game in hand.

The rest, in years to go, will be history.

A lot can happen in an entire season but assuming that Robins stays, he is able to put the finishing touches to the jigsaw and we stay clear of injuries I'm going for automatic promotion! Can't wait. Block 14 debut season!

Still not getting overly excited, will see who is here come the end of the Window and what the team is looking like to get a better idea.

I know recruitment isn't finished but I struggle to see where the goals will come from. I think we lack creativity and a goalscorer. I like Robins though, sure he'll sort it out.

I think we will challenge for a top 7 place, regardless.
With a goalscorer though I feel automatic is defo in the sights.

I always think we will be champions, so I have really curtailed my thinking this time round and have tried to lower expectations dramatically.

We will therefore finish second, just losing out to top place on goal difference.

Top at Christmas and that will be just enough to secure us an 8th placed finish come May.

We definitely should be!

But like others have said-seems to be a jigsaw piece missing to complete our squad.

Whether that's a striker or a creative-there's still time.

One thing that worries me is the lack of pace & hopefully this is something Robins will address.

Can't wait for 1st game tho-defo going to be an interesting season-whatever happens!

im not too bothered about a striker at mo,although would like a specialised target man if possible

i think we most need a number 10, i know steve82 says mcnulty can play there but his youtube vids make him look like a finisher. i would like an assist machine in 10 spot

a david silva maybe. or carl baker

That's the way I've read reports and previous posters of other clubs. MR may have different ideas. We could end up playing 442 yet, we don't not.
Peter Vincenti could end up playing in the 10 yet too, with McNulty up too leading the line.

Plenty of preseason to go and obviously what George decides he's wants to do

If we line up anything like this:

Burge
Willis McDonald New CB Haynes
Kelly Doyle
Thomas McNulty Jones/Reid
New striker

Then I think we have a very good chance. We still have options of O'Brien, Stokes, Turnbull, Stevenson, Vincenti, Biamou Beavon and K.Thomas. As well as any young academy players who shine. If the 2 new signings in that first 11 are any good then I don't see why we wouldn't be up there.

yeah but if its 4231 then we have jones reid g thomas vicente for wide positions

and no one specialised for number 10. could have vicente, mcnulty, beavon i guess but i would much prefer a new signing there

I like your optimism but come Saturday morning we don't have George Thomas registration.

Personally I think McNulty is best used with a target man in a 442 as opposed to the 10 role, but football has moved on a bit since then. Sides play without a natural striker occasionally.

Beavon McNulty and Vincenti can all play the 10 role to a degree. Some better than others but it's piecing it all together to work.
That's Robins job

piecing it together should be plan b imo, if there is a good specialised number 10 out there hopefully we will go for him

there is still a chance g thomas will stay

Bigi and Thomas would have been the two out of contract players who I felt had the most value and would have been in my starting 11 will be disappointed to lose both but when u only give one yr contracts out in the past this happens year after year at least we are now signing players on 2 yr deals

We are on the front foot for once. A decent manager if not top manager at this level. A budget equal or better than many in L2 and time to put it together.
For once we are organised. I expect promotion. Anything less is abject failure. This club can not sustain any more failures.

The following away fans will drown out any home fans at almost every club in this league. At home we will have perhaps the biggest crowd in this league.
So given all this how can we fail to produce the goods?

Absolutely, failure this season is not an option. Otherwise what is the point of this club?

Look at the other teams in L2, they are for the most part in small towns or towns where there is a larger club who limit their support.

When you look at that map it makes you realise just what a low point this club has descended to.
Looking at those names and then noticing Coventry City in that pack is still a little unbelievable tbh.
My goodness if we can't get promoted at the first attempt they all want shooting!

Yep. Swindon, Crawley, Yeovil, Port Vale, Colchester, Stevenage, Notts County, Crewe.

There's a third of the league right there.
