with such names like earnshaw, nugent, harewood, miller, hines,le fondre and phillips being banded around, i have a feeling we wont sign anyone of that calibre,
every transfer window deadline day i watch skysports news full of hope for a shock big signing only to be left disappointed (ironically i remember signing an unknown called dann on deadline day and being well p*ssed off) and when we were desperate for a goalscorer we signed hines on-loan (again i was p*ssed off) strange how things turn out i would be over the moon if we signed dann and hines now!
the point im making is like the saddo iam i cling to every rumour , every snippit , every name in the paper and get excited by it all only to be let down so i think we need to lower our expectations and expect some unknowns and hope we sign another , dann, fox or gunnarsson rather than a o,halloran, bishcoff or mcnamee

We usually sign one or two gems a season on average, so i expect a couple of good signings at least.

Work on the theory we have no money, cannot afford anyone above Div One standard and you won't be disappointed. Also be prepared for Cranie, Clingan and Turner to be sold and be thankful if they are at the Ricoh at the start of the season. Be realistic and expect nothing and you won't be disappointed.

Or work on the theory Turner, Craine and Clingan stay and Clarke,Hussey and Juke are more experienced, much improved and will look to make big impressions. And add some free signings and pay them with the wages that King,Macindoe, Carsley,Westwood, Doyle and Ozzy have been taking you may enjoy the season ahead.

We have very little money to work with, we need to be realisitc! Sadly most of the names being bounded around, we will not get simple as.

Anyone who is disappointed when a conjured list of targets fail to materialise as signings is foolish.

I'll be disappointed at the end of the season when we're in a relegation scrap.

We are being linked with people way out of our reach by nothing other than blind optimism. I'll back whatever AT does, though. I was dancing a jig when we signed Chris Hussey as I knew he was one of the best little gems in the lower leagues. As for Dann-anyone who had seen that goal for Walsall on Youtube couldn't have been disheartened when we signed him!

I will say that I'm a bit worried that the one player we seem likely to sign is a 'keeper who hasn't convinced the Northampton fans he's up to League 2 standard. When Westwood came he was glaringly the best lower league GK since Kiely. With the 2 best 'keepers in the European U21's well under 6 ft, I really do wonder why we let Quirke go if we're paying money for Dunn..

i can see two keepers coming in murphy as no1 and dunn as number 2! maybe that mite b the reason irelands stalling on signing a new contract! i wud like another young not expensive wages/fee with potential left back as understudy for hussey! if gunnarsson goes which i reckon he will we still have deegan and clingan c/m with 3 players bell, mcsheff and baker who can play at the top of the diamond or wide of the diamond so thorn has the option to either get 2 new wingers and 1 creative midfielder or 2 creative midfielders and 1 winger depending how he see,s the 3 amigo,s fit best he seems to like sheffs top of diamond so personaly can c thorn gettin the 1st of the 2 options! and the strikers i think he will bring in 2 new faces for defo so a strike force of juke eastwood 2 new players i think he will try and off load o,donovan and platt and have jeffers as 5th choice striker mayb b sent on loan.

I can only remember 2 signings that really excited me when we made them - Keane and Stein. Dublin I thought we'd paid too much, I'd never heard of Huckerby, Hadji I thought 1 goal in the world cup was a lot to sign a player on. Hutchinson, Wallace, Gibson, Quinn, thought they were all past it or untried.

We do have to be realistic, but if Thorn has shown anything so far it's that he can bring the best out of individuals. I wouldn't be surprised if Murphy (assuming we get him) + Oggy turned Dunn into a good keeper and I have faith in this coaching team to turn anyone we bring in into a fine player.

Keep the faith guys! People are writing off the next season before we've even kicked a ball.

Thorn has already said at the fans forum he will be doing his own scouting. Id rather he brought someone in, but i guess he wants to use his skills to the max. Plus if he does his own scouting he will know a players best position and whether its what hes after. I think in the past hes probably seen managers overlook his opinions on players preferred position, and would feel more comfortable in making these decisions himself.
