Rodrigues could do with a loan and regular mens football as well.
Lampard seemed to actually really rate him as well in recent comments, but he's obviously not going to feature for us anytime soon

Rating him and feeling he is actually first team ready can be miles apart.

With the start he had with injury, I don't think he was ready for a loan in January. Better that he builds fitness and gets schooled by us for the time being.

Yep, I agree.
I just thought it was interesting that he did single him out for praise, and hopefully Lampard has seen enough to see there is some potential there

The question is why not? I doubt we chose him over anyone else. We just took him as a low cost option to add to what we have.

Unless he took a big wage cut then he’s not an especially low-cost option.

It’s a strange signing considering the obvious fitness concerns and it’s not like clubs were lining up to sign him.

Lampard obviously thought he could come in handy and I get the feeling it was best we could get as another loan and perm off table after grimes transfer went through

We brought him in when we couldn't bring in any player under contract. Waste of a wage for a few months at worst. An insurance policy for a few positions if our injury problems get worse. He isn't match fit but he is experienced.

What did people expect from a player who’s barely played competitive football in 9 months? He may have signed with a view to next season if we’re in the Championship.

It’s a decent signing, people’s expectations are just inflated.

If he was bought in with a view for next season, surely he would of signed a 18 month contract, not a short term one.

The club probably wants him to prove his fitness and worth before dishing out extended terms. After all, he’s barely played in the last 9 months.

Some people are all or nothing. Just like our stuttering defeat last night. 9 wins out of 10 brilliant. 9 wins out of 11 turns to a disaster and we're just not good enough.

Few months contract best for us. If we need him we have him. If we get promoted we let him go. If we remain in the Championship he would have a whole preseason and would be fit enough. A good enough squad player that can cover a few positions.

I think it's all about encouragement and making him feel part of the set up. It has been a big move for him and will take time for him to really settle. That's why it would be wrong to push him out on loan too soon. It is better for him to build his fitness levels at our club. He will be learning a lot by just training with first team. I always thought the fans that thought he would be straight in as a first team contender were wildly optimistic. I didn't expect him near the first team at all this season, bench at best second half of the season and that isn't writing him off.

On reflection.
The collective performances of Simms , Haji & Bassy were comedy gold last night.
Haji will be fine , just needs a moment.
Bassette time will tell.
Ellis , from his body language , I'm just starting to think he isn't very well.

Norm Bass' looks to me like he is trying to stand on his left leg & kick with it at the same time.

By what metric is it a “decent signing”?

Why can’t we just accept it when it’s just a bad game? It was just one of those nights for us.

You’re asking me for metrics on a players who’s played 20 minutes for us. Why do I like it? He’s on short term contract, with presumably low wages and he’s a proven Championship player, so it’s risk-free.

There’s 9 games left of the season and he could play a role at some point. If not, we let him go and enjoy the memories of his song and the retro gear modelling and/or discounts…

You could still do 6 months with a year option, which could be triggered with x appearances/minutes.

The risk is the money. We know what his last salary was - if it’s even half of that here then it’s not a trivial amount.

League One salaries (where he might very well play next season) are far smaller than Championship salaries.

I accepted it during the game. It just wasn't to be. What makes me laugh is those who have a go about us letting two goals in again, although we won the other games, yet on another thread go on about how useless the officials were.

If we're going to play an attacking game where our midfielders and even our defenders are scoring and setting up goals we are going to get caught out at times. In the last two games we've had goals against us that shouldn't have stood but it's all part of the game. They even gave an offside against us when we didn't even touch the ball.

We're on a fantastic run where we haven't been able to put out our best side since before the run started. I'm happy with that.

Do you think a player out of contract and trying to get back into the game would have been demanding a big wage?

Wouldn't surprise me if someone who supported us as a boy and grew up locally wanted to be a part of what is happening at our club accepted an offer to be one of our lowest earning players. After all earning 5k a week and given the chance to play again is better than earning nothing and being pushed towards retirement.

It is pretty trivial. What would it be, £250k max?

When we are now regularly signing multi million pound players that's tiny.

To me he is just like an insurance policy. I hope we don't need him but if we do I will be happy we paid the small premium. He can cover different positions.

He’s a good championship player and failing to break into an MLS team is hardly a shame.

Buzzing he got his big moment playing for us! As people said, this has that same feel as the draw v Blackburn away in 22/23!

We’ve had some last minute winners but this one is potentially the most important because we’re under pressure to get back in the playoffs!

JP12… Take a bow son.

Yeah, I don't imagine he's ready to start yet, but he's probably going to get more of an opportunity if Torp is now out for a while.

The loan has already been paid off with that winner as far as I'm concerned!

I genuinely think we’ll extend his contract next season if we don’t go up. He’s a solid role player to have in the squad.

I agree and I’m all for it. Some people are still stuck in the days of having a bench of 5 and only being able to make 3 subs. In the modern game where you can name 9 subs and make 5 subs, it’s more and more a squad game.

Solid squads win promotion. In the past we had absolutely nothing on the bench and were totally reliant on the 11 starting and no injuries.

Having a player of Paterson’s experience and ability to conjure some magic in the last 15 minutes off the bench, when you’re struggling to break a team down, is an asset not a hindrance.
