I went to Deadmau5 & The Enemy. Showing my age?

To be fair I never quite understood how the Ricoh would compete with the NEC. It's basically if you want something smaller than the NEC come to Coventry!

I guess in the same way Akron competes with Cleveland, its is a smaller City, but there is still a demand for events & they get them.

Yh granted I am not arguing that there is a demand for smaller events, just wasn't the underlying aim always to compete with the NEC? Seems ludicrous to me.

Nope, and I am not going to go looking either. I'm not looking for a debate on whether it was said or not!

According to this http://www.cwn.org.uk/skyblues/2000/12/001215-arena-statement.htm the NEC were involved with the design of the Arena 2000 facilities and one time partners.

saw Bon Jovi twice at the Ricoh with my wife, Kids and bro what a fantastic time I couldn't get tickets for the boss or Oasis as they ran out to quickly.
But old fish would be lucky to fill the Jag club if they would have him.

Aren't they limited to four concerts per year, due to noise regulations...? (which sounds silly, the Council owning the stadium and yet imposing their own restrictions on it).

I'm sure if they'd made more noise about turning it into a full time concert venue with more gigs- the extra noise and traffic disruption offset against not having home games there, Sisue would have thought twice about buggering off as they believed they were key tenants....

You are correct Open air concerts need to be booked at least 8 months in advance and I dont see a lot going on with ACL - this has nothing to do with the JR at all, it looks like ACL marketing are not doing their job brininging in business

Not really anything to do with that in my opinion. It's just one of those years where touring cycles align to mean there's an abnormally low number of stadium tours this summer. The Ricoh is very highly regarded as a music venue, hence the number of tours they get. I know some people moan that there's not enough artists who play there but compared to pretty much every stadium apart from Wembley the Ricoh would rank as one of the most prolific.

Very strange
I hope it isn't because they are seriously contemplating a full time replacement for CCFC and they don't want concerts in the way of any long term opportunities......

What decent groups are there these days? The best chances of getting a gig or two are when the oldies tour.

LOCOG couldn't get certain bands to do the olympics opening and closing ceremonies because they weren't touring, didn't feel like it etc. so I doubt ACL can persuade them to tour. Would have been nice to see someone there this summer though.

Would that be prolific in the way that Clive Platt would be a prolific goalscorer for us?

So I assume you think they used to be able to get gigs and now because CCFC have moved out they can't.

As much as you jest they are top performers who have played there.

I find it very weird

Hard to deny that the Arena underperforms for live gigs, two last year, none this year, very poor.

Many don't come back either, even when on the circuit again, the same happened with sports too.

When was the last time a Heineken Cup game, or England U21's game at the Ricoh?

No concerts this summer is just a result of stadium filling bands touring cycles, anyone who is trying to read more into it is looking for a problem that isn't there.

As for U21 internationals ignoring the fact that they don't repeat venues too often you have to wonder if the FA / FL role in our situation is working against ACL there. How would it look if the FA and FL were saying we had to play elsewhere as there's no viable stadium in Cov and at the same time putting on games in Cov themselves? Could be a factor.

I don't know how many times I have to repeat this before people believe it but that's the area I work in and i guarantee you the Ricoh is very highly thought of for stadium shows. Again if you're trying to read something into there being no concerts there this year or bands not returning you are looking for something that isn't there and don't understand how the industry works.

There are concerts around though, just not at the Ricoh, being in denial doesn't prevent that fact.

The only major stadium tour is One Direction who are doing multiple dates at Manchester and London meaning they're skipping the Midlands totally. Rod Stewart is doing a handful of stadium dates, past that (and I'm not in the office at the moment to check) I don't think there's a whole lot on the cards. Its a problem for the music industry more than it is for ACL, the number of bands who can, with any economic viability, stage a stadium tour is dwindling and those that do reach stadium levels are finding it hard to sustain that level. To really make it worthwhile now there are larger arenas emerging have to be able to do Europe wide stadium tours.

What other new grounds (with the exception of Wembley as London is a whole different business model) have got as many concerts as the Ricoh? You're probably only looking at Man City and they had one, or maybe even 2, summers with no shows at all.

With regards to the music events I don't pretend to know what happens in the industry but what I can tell you from the 1 concert that I've been to (red hot chilli peppers) the club shop was open on a Sunday, out of season and doing a roaring trade in replica tops that RHCP fans were buying as a souvenir, just another example of lost revenue because of the idiotic decision to move to Northampton.

I was also impressed with the acoustics for an outdoor venue.

How many shows does the Ricoh have though a year?

Obviously can discount 2012 because of the Olympics, but two last year, none this year, Think from memory only two to four per year since opening, and the Jaguar Arena doesn't have too much business this year.

Lots of people around last year playing, think the Eithad must have had about 7 or 8 large gigs, Bon Jovi, Muse, Robbie Williams(x4), One Direction, this year as you said got One Direction multiple times. Bon Jovi played at Villa Park last year as well i think.

Kings of Leon around, playing Sheffield,Newcastle,Milton Keynes.

Pearl Jam playing Leeds and Milton Keynes.

Admittedly not as many around as last year(but didn't get many of those anyway), but to not get any at all this year, without the standard excuse of football getting in the way?

Not saying it's not a good venue, but seriously underused.

If I was a local taxpayer and supporter of a local charity I'd wonder what the hell the people running the community asset were playing at myself.

Yeah you'd assume that if there are no tours to host even if you wanted to, any future business model certainly wouldn't be aiming for those tours other than as a sideshow to the main event.
