A disgusting sport that has no place in the modern world. This boxer had to be placed in a medically-induced coma and has now given up boxing forever. No doubt he has permanent and irreversible brain damage.

Remember that Australian fella that died due to getting hit by a cricket ball? Should cricket be banned as well?

Banning it is a stupid idea. It will only go underground and be even more dangerous.

There's a lot of research going on at the moment into the long term effects of concussions. Particularly in the NFL and NHL and the leagues could be on the hook for some big payouts.

If those sports are forced to change as the dangers of contact are too great its hard to see how boxing and MMA aren't going to have a problem down the line.

If it got banned more people would be seriously hurt/die as a result as it would still happen, just illegally.

Think how many lives it saves by keeping people off the streets? Yes it's a barbaric sports at times but that's the nature of the beast. People die playing every single sport.

There's even suggestions that heading the ball in football should be banned.

Ban boxing? What a load of bollocks.

At every fight there is a doctor and medical staff. Injuries like this are thankfully rare.

Newsflash - people die in all sorts of sporting events. Football, rugby, cricket. Even the Tour de France!

But the purpose of those sports isn't to beat someone senseless or until they are unconscious.

No, he only just announced he is giving up boxing. No doubt because his doctor told him the next punch could kill him.

No professional boxer goes into the ring with the aim of putting the other boxer in a coma.

Ah yes, we should ban boxing and make it illegal.

That way, people like Nick Blackwell wouldn't take part in unlicensed underground fights would they? The ones without doctors ringside.

Its the boxers choice to fight, nobody forces them to do it and they can earn a lot of money from doing it. If it's your passion to fight and you're willing to take the risk then what's the problem? Surely way more safe than banning it which will inevitably lead to more underground fighting in a less controlled environment....

Add to the fact that boxers are potentially the fittest and best conditioned sportsmen out there. Definitely the hardest training regime. The dehydration involved in making weight is an issue that could possibly be discussed.

Just how does being fit prevent your brain being damaged when it is pummelled repeatedly?

Its the same bloke who thinks the Grand National should be banned, one of these people who likes to comment on subjects he doesnt understand whilst he sits behind his computer scared to leave the house due to the modern world.

Second to that, I hope he is fishing as it will have been the best fish since the great Mexican Wave fish of Mar'16

Silly to think this would ever get banned, it's a great sport and is well monitored to make it as safe as possible. The health and safety police hate it but it's a sport of true skill and combat

If you are going to punch each other out in the name of sport then you know the risk you are taking. If you ride a bike round Brandon stadium without brakes in a competitive manner you also know the risk. If you play Rugby and get tackled hard you also know the risk. Need I go on? Now if 70% of boxers end up in a bad way due to participating in their sport then we may have a reason to call it 'unsafe' in the public interest. But that is not the case. It's a brutal sport but take it away and it goes underground with less regulation. Many sportsmen and women take risk and the rewards are sometimes huge financially. It's a choice, no one forces anyone to do something they don't want to do.

While both those things are true, at least to a certain extent, I don't think either of those arguments will hold the discussion off forever.

You can say it will go underground but is that a reason to not ban it? Nothing would be illegal on that basis. And of course how many people who would have taken up the sport wouldn't bother if there wasn't the potential to earn millions.

Knowing the risk is a tricky one as what we know about concussions is changing rapidly. Its led to changes in other sports, such as the NFL and NHL, as well as lawsuits. Why would the same not apply to boxing? Problem is if you take blows to the head out of boxing will anyone still be interested?

Some light reading if anyone is interested:

Yeah agree with those assertions too but we must not simply legislate against free will. Otherwise where would everything end up? You'd get a situation where we would be too afraid to leave the house for fear of something going wrong and being blamed or sued. Risk taking is a part of life. I don't need science to tell me a punch in the head could kill me and wouldn't want the nanny state to tell me what I should or should not be doing.

Boxers make a conscious decision to beat the living daylights out of each other for the money on offer...which would mostly be out of their reach otherwise.

Would it be fair to deny them the opportunity?

...onwards & upwards PUSB
