Before the season gets under way with plenty of new faces and AT moulding his squad together I still have not seen the one missing element that I feel is important to any team.

It's talisman. We don't have one do we?

Someone with that extra bit of magic now and then, leadership quality, leader by example etc etc. In the past we have had a few good ones to remember even in more recent times that have inspired team performances and directly affected the result in our favour. Players like Denis Wise for example.

If we are to gain promotion then I feel we need one. I also feel it should be someone in that central midfield area who can drive our fortunes on, pick up the ball and and make us play.

Think it's AT's missing link. Is there one out there available that fits this position?

I think Fleck may prove to be your "Talisman" This year.

Got to hope one of the new signings can step up to the plate

Fleck may be able to produce moments of flair and creativity but leadership qualities?

I dont think we really have one who would provide all those qualities.

I think that the one with a bit of quality and who can do something unexpected, and who most away fans would think of when thinking of Coventry, would be McSheffrey. He does't provide the leadership qualities you outlined though.

I think the leaders would be Kilbane, Malaga and Wood.

You would be hard pressed to find anyone in our league who can do everything.

Don't think Malaga will be our leader, he doesn't even speak English, the Edge has been translating for him! Sheffers should be taking up this role, he's a Coventry lad and should lead with his heart!

Personally, on the leader/captain thing, I'm starting to think Thorn is waiting for Jennings to sign?

Funny, because thats what I thought, but then couldnt get my head around why he is still on trial if AT thinks he could be the team captain

So, I decided that AT was waiting to see if Wood stayed !

Ah yeah, that's a good shout. Maybe Thorn see's that Jennings has the personality, he just wants to make sure of his leadership ability on the pitch? But I think I'll go with your idea instead!

You don't have to speak the language to be a leader. The way you play, how you react to going behind or referees decisions and putting your body on the line amongst ither thingss show whether your a leader or not.

Yeah, I agree with u in a lot of ways but that's not the only jobs a captain has. A Captain is a player others can turn to wen they need inspiration, calming dwn or a chat after the match about some personal gripes with other players/family. Physically u can hav all the characteristics needed to be a leader but if u can't explain urself to your team or understand wat they are saying wat kind of leader are u?

Talisman and captain are different things. I am not saying that Malaga should be captain but he can be a leader. I think the captain should be wood.

Personally I think a "talisman" has nothing to do with leadership. Its a player that makes you feel you have a chance makes you feel lucky. You would say that Abdel Taarabt was a talisman for QPR for example but he certainly was not a leader. McSheffery has been touted as a talisman since his return and to be honest has been hit and miss..... it may well be that Fleck could turn out to be the guy (Bigi could have been had he stayed) but we need to give the players time to develop before we will find out. It would however be good to see a few characters dotted around the team rather than the bland teams we have had for a few years

A leader needs the skills mentioned by others but he also needs to have a clear head, intelligence to get the best from situations, a sense of purpose and drive, calm under pressure but forceful when it is needed, someone who knows when to put an arm round a player or when to give him a boot up the backside to perform, someone who maintains a good standard in his own game, someone who helps to create a team and gathers them in for a common cause and he must be a good clear communicator. Wood may be it but I still do not see any clear candidate...... it isnt just about heart and putting an arm band on McSheffery is not it in my opinion

Agreed, hopefully he will be the man who makes the difference. Could be that creative player behind the forward(s) that we really need. Although it could be a massive year for Cody.

Talisman if you look it up, taking the basic meaning implies something 'magic' and there are no players with any of that!
Wood may well be the obvious captain choice but our talisman is simply not there.
As OSB said it should be someone who can make his presence felt to good effect and that is what Wise brought us to such good affect.

Who is out there that can give us that? Suggestions on a postcard please to Andy Thorn, CCFC.

You seen all these new signings enough to make that judgement yet? I think Fleck's been brought in for that exact reason and, by the sound of it, has shown glimpses of magic in pre-season.

I haven't seen flecks goal at accrington but a 40 yard lob sounds pretty magic to me

Fleck will be our main guy. Believe Jennings (if we get him) and Barton are gunna be huge too though. All in all if we get Jennings im just feeling really optimistic for this coming season, just hoping we dont flop!

I remember David Bell scoring a lob from the half way line....perhaps he will be the 'talisman'?
