Depends on what you class decent, and whether you're happy for a limited player who's was good defensively (e.g Makelele ) or who want someone who's got a bit more to their game (e.g. Alonso). And obviously it's all relative to the league they played in.

Doyle is the last best one I can remember we owned. Wise also.

I'd agree, but most hate him because of his limitations. Safri was decent before him, then it's Boateng....Lloyd McGrath....

Would say Wise was more of a box to box player for us.

Would kill for a Michael Doyle now (every team needs one, etc. etc.).

Now that's what I call a proper DM. Doyle did the job, but we haven't had anyone close to Boateng (relative to the division) since.

Agreed, I remember getting shot down for suggesting we should have tried to resign him on relegation, got told he's a "non footballer".

I remember watching the cov - Feyenoyd (sp?) pre season friendly, and young Boateng played right back for them and had a stormer, was so glad when we signed him a few weeks later.

Doyle's best form for us, though, was surely when we encouraged him to actually get forward?

I never rated Safri, but suppose he'd count.

And before that... Carlton Palmer!

It's an odd question though, because we don't really do goalscoring midfielders either, so maybe the question could be broadened to 'last decent midfielder'!

I wasn't his biggest fan, but he brought some bite that we've not had since and at this level he's a good enough footballer.

Norwood was a decent midfielder......but we didn't own him. Hughes in his first season? Thompson? McCallister? hadji and Chippo? God this is depressing

I would class Norwood at our time as more creative

We really have struggled with that Role

Vicente Engonga! Under Black he looked half decent (no I'm not joking; just hope im thinking of the right player )

If not him, anyone But Doyle! I hated him. HATED!!!! And still do! Supposed to have been signing a Rottweiler. Signed a pussy cat!

Is there any of the defence that could be moved into that position? I haven't seen us for a while, would Pennington be able to do it?

I'm hoping you mean Eric Dolymeux!

Engonga only played under McAllister and was old enough to be your Dad!

No. No. No.

Didnt Coleman try the same thing with Crainie? Why move a player from his best position? Still think Crainie was a decent CB we let go too easily. And played out of position far too much.

Barnsley fan I know says he gets away with a lot because he's a defender who can control a ball, but is a bit lazy, and showboats too much.

Which is, tbf, a bit how I remember him

Could be! One wasn't with us long but did an alright job.

Another was Yazid Monsouri! Only sent him packing back to Le Harve because he chose country over club I think? He looked decent too (or were we really desperate at these times and I was blinded by their average-ness?)

It's because I think it is what we have dearly missed for the last few years. Where as we have had creative ones

Not since we stopped paying for players we haven't!

Who was the last central midfielder you could say drove us forward? Again I'd be saying... Doyle!

Sure he doesn't mean Eliott Ward? he was a waste of a talent! Could have been a good player. Chose a lavish lifestyle and more interested in his appearance than his game.

he was capped over 60 times, and a regular in the french top division, so suggest he was a little better than what we have now

Nah I mean a Lloyd, Safri, Doyle. Type player
A hard man tackler who knows once he wins the ball he needs to give it to someone else quick

He gives you a bit of grit and puts that crowd pleasing tackle in just when the crowd and his team need a boost

I know it was a few years ago but Stewart Robson one of the best but a bit injury prone, top top player

Some people think Doyle was better than Safri as a defensive midfielder lol

Fleck has was never a defensive misfielder until Pressley told him not to cross
the half way line. I m sure he ll push forward now.

Robson was awesome, shame we didn't have him fit for longer but of he was, he would never have signed for us.

no one mentioning Clingan

Not often fit, but when he was - what a wonderful player.
