I've been ignorant of this all my life!The FA had a lot to answer for in 1921 - I'm surprised that the same people are seemingly still alive & running the game...although maybe it's just the old fuddy-duddy attitudes that remain?
Some phenomenal revelations - well done the team behind this programme.
A few of us blokes in the current age need to watch this & then take a good look at themselves - & hopefully change their attitude.

I had absolutely no idea either. Can't believe some women in the game now didn't even know.

A hidden history and quite outrageous what the FA did.

You can only wonder just how popular women's football would have been these days had it continued to grow.

Lovely comment from Rodney Marsh in there about a woman's place I notice.

Remember reading about this years ago. Wasn't there a political aspect to it? The women were raising money for the miners who were on strike if memory serves.

I don't know what you lot are talking about it. I assume some TV program that I never saw.
Lots of things were unacceptable and banned years ago.
1921 is ancient history.
By the way, until very recently, Netball banned all male players.

And so they should. If they had anything about them netball would ban all players.

What we are talking about Gaz is that 100 years ago women's football was more popular than men's and they were drawing crowds of 60,000, but then suddenly the FA told all league clubs to not let women play at their grounds and the women were then forced to either just give up or to then just play on local parks pitches.

'Evidence' was then also produced by medical experts saying that football was bad for women's health and that it could affect ability in motherhood and pregnancy.

Doesn't matter that it is ancient history (besides,I wouldn't call 100 years ago 'ancient'), the fact is it was completely and utterly wrong and totally unjustified.

Here In Saudi Arabia they have just announced girls can partake in physical education at school from 2020.

Knew about women's footy in the early 20th century but not the extent of support or the way in which it was closed down. Incredible today to think that the women's game could be bigger than men's football.

I bought a camel when out was out in the Middle East. Brought it home to Coventry and rode it down the high street.

Someone stopped me and asked me if it was a boy or a girl and I said I think it's a girl because people keep pointing at me as they walk past and say 'look at the c**t on that camel.'

I'd have absolutely no problem with the phasing in of mixed age groups to eventually include the professional game.

Could any of us honestly say that if there was a woman footballer out there that could help us get promoted we wouldn't;t want to see her in a city shirt?

I know there is the argument about physical makeup not being the same but I think a large portion of that could be negated by going through the same academies, using the same facilities and getting the same preparation as the boys. If they weren't good enough then at least we'd know.

I think one day it will be lack black footballers and they will look back and wonder what the fuck we were on about.

My father took me to see a women's football match in the late 50's. It was Coventry Ladies against someone. The quality of play was absolutely awful. It was actually embarassing to watch. Nowadays I am a big fan of the women's game and watch it just as much as the men's game. But it is difficult as it is not televised much.

I think it was wrong of the fa to ban womens football.

But as for, the womens game was more popular. Was this not largely because of the fact men's football was suspended during the first world war?

When football resumed after the world war Chelsea men's team had a 70k crowd in 1920 v Aston villa.

The same year in which the dick Kerr ladies had the 53,000 attendance v Everton ladies, which was at the height of the womens game back then and appears to be the choice of match to highlight and reference when talking about the popularity of womens football.

So yea strongly disagree with the fa shutting down ladies football but I'm sceptical of the claim that it was bigger than men's football.

Women weren't allowed to vote until 1928? That's completely different, Gaz. This is like giving women the vote and then taking it back off them.

If it was a case of women not being allowed to play football that would be wrong in itself, but at least it would be set in stone.

Women WERE playing football and were allowed to do so and thousands were watching them, then suddenly that right to play was taken back off them again.

Not the same thing at all unfortunately.
