Tend to agree, however, do wonder if Lampard may persuade him to stay? Suspect this season has damaged PL hopes for now.

Less about Sheaf and Lampard and more about a Doug not wanting to lose out on a few mill tbh.

This paragraph seems convulsive on it but guess we’ll see.

“His form then earned him a fresh deal in December 2021, taking him to 2024. But, having established himself as a regular starter and notching seven goals so far this term, the 28-year-old has been handed improved terms that extend that agreement for another season until 2025, with an option in the club’s favour to extend it even further.”

Ben Sheaf is an excellent DM. But he has missed Hamers creativity along side him.

Last season and this he has suffered because we have tried to play through him from the back and it doesn't suit him. He is too slow ponderous and cautious. This season alone he has made some suicidal passes resulting in turnovers leaving the defence out numbered. He just isn't a play maker. Just a great DM.

Allen, Rudoni and Torp are much better at getting us forward quickly. Although Rudoni and Torp come into their own higher up the pitch.

Sometimes players have to work it out. What is the best route out through the middle or down the sides and that can depend on how the opposition set up. But trying to give the ball to Sheaf constantly, to play us out from the back was a bad rut to be in. He doesn't cope well to being man marked, can't find pockets of space in that situation and too slow, ponderous and cautious to be an out and out play maker. Being able to pick a pass does not make you a player maker. It is knowing when to take a pass, when to refuse it, when to drag your maker away to create space, how and when to drop into a pocket of space. Most of all knowing what you are going to do with the ball when it is on the way to you.

Interesting. I’d thought he just wasn’t up to speed due to his injuries.

That may play a part. But he sometimes wants the ball when it isn't on and he isn't good at finding space to play in, say like Bannon, Hodge and Pritchard.

I liked the look of Dele-Bashiru for Watford.

We have played 29 Championship games so far this season. Sheaf has played 19. That's a problem and has been since he joined us.

Do you mean he’s missing too many due to injuries?

I think he may be sufferng a bit mentally. He didn't get his move in the summer, then an injury which hampered his form, then another injury during the second transfer window. With the added weight of being captain in a team which is struggling I think it all was getting to him

Of course. It's happens season after season. He's too fragile. Picks up injuries too easily.

Captain in football is just a symbolic title ,can't see how it can effect a players form.

I get that but nowhere did the club announce that officially and, with the greatest respect, Turner isnt always accurate!

Sorry, yes I agree. I wondered if you were saying he’d played the majority of our games…I’ve re-read it and clearly you weren’t.

Yeah, it’s a problem because he’s such a good player when fit, at least was last year.

OK I’m going with the weight of evidence which includes club sanctioned interviews. Some clubs don’t even state the contract length it doesn’t mean the contract doesn’t have an end date.

Sort of coincides with what we are seeing now though. Since he's been out injured, we have had a turn of fortune

It's not mate, promise! It's reassuring to see I've got some allies now though. I've posted similar stats in the past as mentioned above, but I don't think they land very well as he's been a very popular player. He's played a bit worse this season though, and with all the changes I think some are starting to give this side of the argument a listen. Compare all the seasons and when he has and hasn't played, versus results, and there are patterns worth discussing.

Good post though Evo, you did make me laugh, which is nice with all the arguments on here at the moment!

I like sheaf , and there are potentially other variables at play such as what the rest of the starting 11 is because it won't always be the same..

But it's a theme that's been showing for over a couple years really .

I’m not surprised at those stats to be fair - I’ve thought this recently.

We play quicker without sheaf and it’s given Torp a bit more freedom - Allen’s energy in the middle though has been a big help.

It’s obvious when he plays everyone looks for him and for every play to go through him - I liken it to when we had Gary Macallister. Everything slows down.
Cardiff was a classic example - van ewijk ball out wide the amount of time he just stopped and played it inside to sheaf.

have to say though, if he’s not been 100% fit this season then it’s not totally fair to criticise too much.
