Same thing came to my mind; the assistant usually gets the chop shortly before the manager!

Yes, its a quick fix without sacking the manager which is normally the call. Sacking the manager can be costly so more clubs these days suspend assistants etc and expect the same change but without sacking a manager and costing the chairman.

I don't understand why fans complain about that. They own the football club...why should they attend the games if they don't support the club?

sometimes its about showing your face to say 'we are in this together' when times are tough not being a faceless name. A certain lady owner in our club springs to mind in being an example of this.
