I learnt a lesson yesterday. A well known one that I thought I understood but don't.
Be careful what you wish for.
Someone commented on a thread that was made when Thorn was Caretaker. Although I wasn't a member of the forum back then, I shared the excited sentiments of hope for a new messiah. His brand of passing football following the hoofball we had been exposed to for months prior, the way he seemingly steered us away from relegation and the general likeability of the bloke. Post match interviews where he'd say "I was gagging for a beer by the end of that!" in my mind were awesome. He wasn't the cheap option, he was the fans choice. He had his best set of players sold from under him, his seniors didn't want to know. Although I don't know how it ended up this way, why we have a deep squad yet the same problems remained, I know that he is, ultimately, accountable for that. I still like Thorn and wish him well, but I think it was the best move for both parties.
Last night I watched Richard Shaw's albeit probably temporary Sky Blue Army win a local derby in an exciting fashion against a team in a division above fielding their first team. Had Thorn left during pre-season, it would have been Birminghams new manager I would have picked to replace him. Now, if we've got off to a bad start, The Blues have had an even worse start... with players we would love to have. I am positive our fan base would already have turned on him by this point and, as we all know, that isn't a great place to be as a collective of Sky Blue loving/suffering folk.
So, as of today, I don't have a favourite for promotion. I Shaw goes on a rampage of L1 over the next few weeks, I won't be screaming out for him to take us on. If by some miracle, Harry Redknapp throws his hat into the ring, I won't be salivating at the prospect of his particular brand of winning football coming to us at the Ricoh. I shall be waiting patiently as to who is appointed, trying to trust in Fisher and Waggott that their first managerial appointment will be one of substance. When the new fella is intalled, I shall do my best to support what he has to offer.
Although if Dennis Wise gets offered the job, well, thats just fine!!
