What Will You Leave Behind ? (1 Viewer)

As we hear of the passing of Tom Petty, on the radio fellow musicians have said he's left behind his great music, and this is a great legacy to leave to his family and friends and fans. How true is that. But it got me thinking what I'll leave behind ? It won't be money as I've got none, but I've got a good relationship with my son and sister, and may soon be reunited with my other estranged son. So that's reassuring to me. This isn't meant to be morbid, but life is fragile isn't it ? So I'll hand it over to all on here, what will you leave behind ? And I don't mean bills !

doesn't really answer your question though B!

My family, hopefully we'll all stay gone good terms until I peg it!
Hopefully I'll be able to leave them a few bob each, (won't be a fortune by any stretch of the imagination), though the government will probably have that off me to pay some one to wipe away my dribble and change my nappy in my twilight years!

I'm glad I'm friends with my son and sister as there have been some wobbles along the way. My son can have my vinyl collection, there's a few bob in there !

Hopefully I'll have a lasting impression on my daughter and that she'll flourish in life and beyond in part because of me (or in spite of me lol), but financially a fortune. Alive I'm skint, but I have a healthy pension pot, a house, life insurance and if I die whilst still working here I have a huge death in service benefit. My wife / daughter would be loaded ... which certainly makes me feel like I'm in a vulnerable position!

Haven't really thought about it but hopefully the best start possible for my daughter and a comfortable rest of life. I'm not planning to go just yet though and ideally when she is grown up.

I thought debts died with you? Anything can come our of your estate if you leave one, but if you have nothing (and assuming no spouse/partner) I thought they were written off in law? Not 100% perhaps someone who is savvy on those things can clarify, but fairly sure I've heard that before.

I have written a whole stack of stuff for my daughter over the years. Hope it fills her with happy memories for many years to come and is something she can cherish and share with her own children and then on down the line.

When he died we still had to pay water/gas bills etc.They were all friendly at first then quickly turned nasty. I was shocked at their attitude. This was in 2001 so maybe they've changed a bit ?

....but sometimes....in my darker moments, of which I can never seem to escape completely, I cannot help but feel Larkin had a point....

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

I had a similar situation with my mum a couple of years ago and to be fair didn't encounter any problems. Hopefully they've learnt a bit of compassion.

That's appalling (and as I say, I didn't think they could either). At times of grief the last thing you need. I guess it's easy on the end of the phone or in a letter but turn up at your door and they're likely to get knocked out!

Always wanted to leave my collection for my daughter, but she can just conjure any song up any time on her iPhone, or Alexa.

Not as personal as it used to be and now kids will just pick out individual songs and show little interest in albums. My daughter loves Elbow, Muse and the Foo Fighters, but doesn't know which songs are from which albums etc. She'll just pick out this song from that album and that song from this album and it all becomes a blur.

I love my albums, because if I say I want to listen to Abbey Road, I know I am capturing the Beatles from that one tiny little moment in time. I'm not picking a song from 1964, then jumping to 1969 and the back to 1965.

Becoming a lost art.

Me and my sister were clearing out my dads house, what to keep/lob out etc, when his phone rang. It was a landline one and my sister answered it.
We thought it was a call from BT as we were going to get it cut off and cancel it all. But it was from his water company, the chap was really stroppy and I grabbed the phone and told him to fuck off. Twenty minutes later the same company rang again telling me to calm down. My sister then told that caller to fuck off !
We still had to pay in the end but it felt good to vent our spleen so to speak !

My dad's already given me his collection of records, full of original Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Hendrix etc.

Not sure I want to have children myself, but only 32 so plenty of time still.

I know where you're coming from JHFC, but Larkin was a miserable, over-privileged, whinging old twat in my book, and that particular poem boils my piss for various reasons.

Here's my preferred alternative, with some rather kinder advice. At the risk of getting over-emotional I'd say that if you leave nothing else to your kids at least leave them with the idea that life should be enjoyed, and that they are loved.

I'll probably leave behind lots of assets.
I have a house, cars, and a large retirement account but I'll be wary of spending it all and outliving my money.
You never know how long or short your life will be or how much money will be needed to see you through the remainder.
Whatever things I leave behind that have value to me, won't have any value to my daughters, who will probably just throw everything out.
Apart from my left over assets, I hope I leave them good memories.

...but that Larkin poem stuck with me in my early years because my parents DID fuck me up & for many years I didn't want kids because of it.....so glad my Mrs. changed my mind for me:emoji_sunglasses:
