Great win last night with tremendous atmosphere in the Ricoh.After the match in the pub got chatting to a few fans and one bloke was giving his mate stick calling him a fairweather supporter etc,as it was his first game for a long time and went on to say true supporters don't pick and choose when to turn up but keep going all the time. I class myself a true City fan as I hardly miss home matches going back decades,but hardly go to away fixtures due to finance.Yet some could say I should find the cash then to travel.
So my question is: what is a true supporter then ?

Somebody that goes to games?

Yes people move away etc but the 'true' type of fans are those that attend surely? Not knocking those that can't make just being factual the diehards are the top

I would say a supporter is someone who financially contributes to the club, be it buying tickets, merchandise etc. Problem is now that things might be on the up (possibly) there will be a large number of supporters who have followed the club through all the shit it has been through for the last fifteen years, who cannot wait to slag off retuning fans for not having done the same. Its a real pity because the club clearly needs all the fans it can get and not have retuning fans being put off by the attitude of other fans.

I'd have to agree as I know several people who say they love our club but don't go to games anymore and they live in Coventry.But if you live away or have work commitments that is different.

Word for word what I was going to say. I have bought the odd shirt over the years. I go to games when it's convenient for me. I have supported the club all my life.

Surely that makes me a true supporter?

I can't agree with that! I'm 33, been going regularly since I was 7-8. Was a season ticket holder for about 10 years. Go home and away when I can. I approximate I've been to 350+ games in my life. I've been to the first 3 games of the season and going on Saturday. However, I'm moving abroad next Tuesday for at least a year and it will be impossible for me to go to games. However, I'd still class myself as a "true supporter".

I think it's anyone that gets bothered. If you care, you'll feel the pain. You'll be elated when we win. And you won't ask something stupid like "where's Huckerby"!

A fan is someone who proclaims to be a fan, weather they go every game or once a year is irrelevant, some people have more going on in their lives than to go to every game due to work, family , finances etc. This different levels of fandom argument is bollocks, we need everyone we can get right now.

The very word "fan" is from fanatic, so if we're being picky, its only those that are absolutely fanatical about the club, who live & breathe it etc.....

That is not, and never has been, me.

I used to be far more of a fan back in the day....used to travel to Highfield road and do most away games despite living in Pompey, London & Edinburgh over the years.....a "wet" company car certainly helped the Edinburgh stint!

These days I'm definitely less of a fan as I only maybe make 5 or 6 away games per season & generally stay away from the Ricoh cos I hate the place.....and live 120+ miles away....also, the fact that these days I have kids, a wife, a business, elderly folks & a mad dog also reduce my chance of attendance.....

..you can call me fairweather..... or you can call me busy.....just don't call me baby !!

yup!

i go to 12-15 games a season, dont do away much if at all most seasons. i buy the shirts every 2 years on average and training wear etc

i log into this forum eevry day, newsnowcoventry is the first website i load up every morning. listen to cov on radio and the phone ins.

24/7 thinking bout city as most do on here i bet.

Depends on what time frame you're talking.
I had a ST since I was 5 only season I haven't was 6F season, (leaving politics aside) I would class those that went to 6F as 'Truer' fans than me in respect of they attended and supported the team at games.

But think it's all down to personal opinion.

I bet at the end of my thread I still won't really know the answer.
But what does irritate me is when someone has the opportunity to go to games but will find an excuse not to when you know the real reason is because they were never a fan in the first place !

A true supporter is one that attends as many games as they reasonably can, allowing for work, health, financial and family commitments. I would also add to that, if the owners of the club act despicably, such as moving the club, say, 35 miles away from its home town/city.

A supporter who picks and chooses how many games they attend based on the levels of success on the pitch is NOT a true supporter, simple as that.

I think it is a load of bollocks personally. I would never knock anybody who turns up and supports the city. We need the die hards who turn up week in week out; but we also need the occasional attenders and spur of the moment fans. Because those are the ones who are going to increase the fanbase.

I suppose the best way of determining the grade of support someone has given to the club would be by a point scoring type system based on home and away matches attended and money spent on merchandise over a period of say 10 years. This would still only identify those at the top who have been lucky enough, wealthy enough and healthy enough to attend so often or those who have remained in the locality of Coventry and not been away studying, travelling, working etc.
Ultimately the club has always needed hard cash to survive and those { especially of late } who have still shelled out irrespective of entertainment would be at the top of the tree and those who whilst having the financial means, health and proximity to the club and have failed to support it much would be at the bottom.
I think there is a core of about 400 who seem to go home and away as a matter of unbreakable ritual and fair play to them !

I'm happy to accept people who have season tickets and go to every away game are more of a fan than me.

Doesn't stop me being a fan, but happy to accept there are many more committed, for whatever reason, than me. Doesn't have to be all about the dick waving.

ok - i have been to probably 25 games per season for 40+ years - all apart from around 6 years in the middle, when due to finances of a new house and new family my appearances were limited to a couple per season

I self admit that i was less of a fan in those years, just because if you dont attend, you are not so close to it all.
I was still a supporter, but not a fan

Just like all of those i work with who support Arsenal or Man U - they are not fans - just armchair supporters

Been a supporter since 1961, luckily just about the start of the Jimmy Hill years, by the age of about 25 had been to over 60 different grounds some many times following Cov including Bayern Munich and Trakia Plovdiv when we shared a plane with Chelsea fans who were on their way to another game in Bulgaria. In the last 5 years i probably haven't been to 60 games all told. Just 2 away games Sixfields season and didn't go a lot last season while that prick Pressley was presenting his rubbish. Been to all the Mowbray home games and a couple of away.
Am i a true supporter ? Tell me to my face i ain't and you can have a nose like a duck's foot.
