What Armstrong's signing tells me (1 Viewer)

I had never heard of Adam Armstrong before we signed him, but what the signing tells me is that there must be quite a few young players out there who could do a similar job in L1, the trick is to be able to identify them and then to persuade the club that the player will benefit by playing for us on loan. Obvious, but the point is, it's not always about attracting a big name.
That's what TM was talking about when he criticised the lack of a scouting system, and surely one of the reasons why SP failed.
I realise all the other clubs in this and other leagues are competing for the same players, but this is the advantage of having a high profile manager with a good reputation, and a properly functioning scouting system.
Hopefully IF Newcastle recall Adam in January (by no means certain) we can find another like him.

I think Jamie clapham had a lot to do with this transfer to be honest .. He was assistant manager with the England youngsters so will know all about Armstrong

Also if he goes back a confident and better more experienced player they may send us other players to help their development.

I'll be honest, I don't think there is a chance he will be here 2nd half of the season unless he really tails off. Newcastle not looking too good and if McLaren gets desperate he might call him back. Also if he continues like this McLaren may want to speed his development and push him in the championship. I pray to god I'm wrong.

As Mowbray said in interview yesterday the difference between defenders in the Prem compared to division one or really three is massive, Armstrong needs this season here to learn and progress his career. If Newcastle become reliable on an eighteen year old kid on January they will be in the shit.

Hit the nail on the head. There was no doubting SPs coaching & commitment but the majority of his signings were pish. More a case of if I sign enough I must get lucky eventually. Look at TMs signings - I only hear positive things from the old clubs which is surely a sign that we are getting the right sort of players, and all the loan signings so far have been a cut above anything under SP.

I know it is early days but if we beat Crewe I might just start getting excited!

Newcastle at the moment can't complain about how Armstong is being used and treated here, we may be L1 but were not playing long ball stuff. Great for them, him and most importanly, us. Win Win Win. Hopefully that will encourge more Premier League clubs to send their kids on loan here, and I imagine that Tony Mowbray being Manager is a big sell as well.

Just had a nose on Newcastles forums, even with the 4 goals in 2 they don't seem overly talkative about it. Hopefully bangs 20 in and they let him stay for full season and hit another 10-15

thats if Mclaren survives the course by Christmas! he is a shite manager and the ol Chairman will soon Feck him off. A new Manager would do an instant recall

Of course. Any new manager is likely to want to see all his players. Wouldn't be surprised if other teams are already enquiring about him for January so we need to be straight on the Newcastle and try and get something in place. Say if we are on fire come January and he is really enjoying his stay we might have a chance.
