Yeah, give that kind of chance to a championship level striker and you are going to get punished. Still, it is preseason and in terms of an all round game it was good

As opposed to giving that chance to an England international striker,

Well that’s what happens when you insist on AAATB and aren’t peak Man City.

So with BTA almost certainly incoming, attack seems to be secured.

A CM would be nice to support Torp and Sheafy.

But apart from upgrading Binksy from loan to perm and bringing in Dovin, are people happy with our defence ?

Having a greater Goals Against last season than the previous Playoff year, is still unnerving to me.

Happy and last year was a gelling year ?

Needs to be looked at ?

Rebuild the back 5 ?

Goal against aren't always down to the back 4 and goalkeeper. The midfield have a lot of responsibility.

It's already been said here that defending starts at the front. If the strikers don't press, it means more work for those behind them.

But within the theme of this thread, there has been transfer activity at the front and to a degree in midfield. Personally, I think we need one or maybe two CMs to help out there.

And apart from the two named players, we haven't looked at our defence.

So that's what the question was about.

Exactly!! Thomas has some really abysmal defensive lapses and Kitching scored some bizarre own goals last season and set a record for red cards. The goals we conceded versus Darmstadt looked preventable as well. We need a solid defender pronto. Defence wins championships as they say here in the US. You can't lose if you don't concede.

The more I think about it the more Camera made sense. Someone who can cover both MvE and Tats. Not sure if that one is dead.

I think Thomas and Kitching are players we can improve. Also, despite being a critic of Dasilva last year I still think there is a player with good attributes there. Think he might be better this year. Binks is someone who we can develop .

You don't have to keep ripping up what you have and keep signing players to improve. It's bonding the unit that counts. I don't have any real concerns with our defenders especially with the addition of Dovin in goal. Wouldn't mind another DCM though.

Fuck me the US teaching us to suck eggs with the oldest cliche in the coaching manual. Next week it will be lesson two, the team that scores the most goals wins!

I’m not surprised that we conceded more last season than we did in 22-23. The players and formation were different for the most part and don’t forget the average age was much lower.

For me, the first test is for the team to show that the end of season collapse in form is totally out of the system. Tbh, that was a whole team issue and I’m pretty sure they will be over it. Then I’ll be hoping that with another year plus a summer of reflection, some of the basic cock ups (which let’s face it affect many young defenders) reduce in frequency.
Could maybe do with a player who can cover RCB and RB.

I think we could do with another RB to cover MvE. Ideally would like a left sided version of MvE as well but Bidwell is a solid option and Dasilva is unlikely to be going anywhere, CB is ok, but wouldn't mind another in with a bit of experience. Can't see much of that happening without Hamer or Vik sell-on clauses though.

The irony with your CM comment. Take one of them out, and we'll do a lot better. A bit like last night, and for the best periods of form we've experienced in the last two years on several occasions also.

Just think that if one or both of them are injured for a lengthy period, we are still short of quality in depth in that area.

Completely agree, I don’t think he’s the “perfect” signing but as a backup to Van Ewijk he could be the sort of player we need. Just depends if he’d be happy to play as the secondary RB or not. Really hope we strengthen the defence in some way, whether that’s a defensive CM, CB, RB or LB.
