Funnily enough, some of the people who were calling for Robins’ head are now saying pretty much that, that it’s all over for the season already. I doubt that King and whoever the new guy is are thinking the same way, at least I very much hope not.

Can anyone think of a manager that made up a 8 point gap with 12 games to go? Anyone at all? I'll give you a clue - there was one a couple of years ago.

As usual, mark Robins will of got us into or around the play-offs. so that’s where should be at the end of season playing lovely attractive flowing football. We were destined to be fifth, sixth seventh or eighth.
Anything less than that is shameful.

After 15 games last season we were 20th, on 15 points. After 46 games we had 64 points, so about 1.58 points per game (with the cup run thrown in there), and we keep being told the last 9 months were shite and that these are talented players, so we have to expect any new manager to at least match that per game.

Sure, then sack him if he doesn’t, rinse and repeat?

I’ve no idea, I didn’t want the guy who proved (two years successively in the championship, and in every season apart from 1st in this league & in L1) that he could go on that kind of run to be sacked in the first place.

We’ve just got divorced. How many dates do we go on with new suitors before making a call? You accept most won’t be the right fit and move on quickly until you find one that looks promising.

As pretty much everyone else has said, Robins target was the play offs for 3/5 seasons, so the new managers lowest expectation should be play offs with a "well its been upheaval" so a top ten finish for this season should be the lowest bar.

As someone who didn't want Robins sacked, if we don't make the play offs with a new manager, then it's been a bad season.

The question is how much time is sufficient to decide that it isn’t working. Is not even a full season long enough?

I think it has to be. Quick coffee and onto the next rather than dragging them round B and Q for a year then glumly splitting the book collection.

Some are being silly about this

Ideally new manager gets us playing well and gives us a shot at playoffs

But consolidation year would be ok as you need to remember DK lost faith that mark robins could deliver results long term for cov. So now he's gonna give someone else a chance to do it long term so that means short term you can take a step back initially so he doesn't need to do as well as 9th of you are being reasonable and more importantly honest with yourself

Yeah the analogy doesn’t work in this case. The season is a write off and there is some pretty ludicrous talk of making the playoffs ‘as the absolute minimum’ when that would take automatics form for the rest of the season.

Quite a few seem to have completely lost the plot unfortunately. Not that it matters what anyone on here thinks so I'm unsure of the need to drag out of people what they expect either. DK sets the targets, if they aren't met the new man will be gone, simple as that really.
People are free to make new threads about sacking him if he doesn't make the play offs though it helps them.

Has to be play offs really otherwise the sacking seems pointless.

If new manager misses play offs and then starts slowly next season, then what?

Looking at current results of the poll, I think new manager is on a bit of a hiding to nothing... If 4 out of ten fans EXPECT playoffs as a minimum they will be under pressure right from the start...

Are those expectations realistic?

Equally, the attitude that stability, regardless of the quality of manager, is the only means of progression is for the birds. I wasn’t wholly ‘Robins Out’ but on a football level I’m not too disheartened about the decision, and I actually agree with a lot of those who are making the case that we now need to push rather than tread water. Plodding to a safe 12th-14th finish would be a waste of everyone’s time.

We’ll need playoff form to make 9th, autos form to make the playoffs.

I just don’t trust these players as far as anyone can throw them. Spend half the game on Saturday playing silly buggers, the other half going for it. Very inconsistent and no leaders.

Concerns me if in January we again sign a bunch of prospects who won’t be up for the fight that most games in this league are.

Top half, needs time to settle and for the players to settle again. He’ll need time to implement his ideas on the squad and this has become a transition year like every year prior frustrating I know

I've said 9th to 11th which I think is reasonable but I can't see what's wrong with people saying higher than that.
After all, Robins has done it in the last 2 seasons from the poor position we're now so why have we sacked him to lower expectations?

This season is not a write off. Ludicrous take. We are 8 points off the playoffs FFS. I don’t care what your model says we should be getting. You can make up 8 points in 31 games.

Sure, it will just require us to hit automatics form for the rest of the season with no blips. Come on, do you see these players getting anywhere near that? You’ve called them out as weak pussies just 2 games ago but think they have that kind of turnaround in them.

Of course it’s not a write off. That kind of talk is stupid.

I don’t really understand why you’d go after someone like Frank Lampard if you were setting your sights on a relegation dogfight or mid-table obscurity. It’s not like he’d be coming in for the ‘project’ over a few years, I imagine he’d be coming in for a quick blast at it then off again. Why would he take it if the best he was expecting was a shit season?

I would take mid table and safe by Easter sad though given a lot of the optimism knocking about prior to the start of the season .

Hopefully the new guy can mount an incredible push for the play offs though

you keep repeating this 8 points off the playoffs, it means little when there are 11 teams between us and 6th place.

History shows you need 74 ish points to make the playoffs, to get there we'll need to average a ppg rate that would get us near the automatic spots over a full season.

I guess the issue here for me is that I did, right up until the point we sacked Robins. A few wins strung together in this league generally puts you somewhere in or around the playoffs. I assumed that would happen at some point in the season and then it is about whether we could kick on and with Robins we generally did. I hadn't entirely surrendered hope of catching Sunderland.

As has been frequently mentioned in this thread we were only 8 points off playoffs and as I have pointed out above teams make up that sort of gap all the time over the last 10 games never mind november (not least of all us 2 years ago). There was/is plenty of life in this season and it is bewildering that people are pretending otherwise.

Now - what is a fair ask of the new manager? For me CC4L is right - is 10-12th bad enough to sack them? Is 14th? Top half they have probably done okay - not as good as I had expected from Robins, but okay. Then Sheaf leaves, probably one or two others and next year is a rebuild and so on and so on - we probably need to get back into the mindset of being a mid table club.

So we need to do 8 points better over 31 games than 11 teams. The league is tight. We did this the season we got into the playoffs with everyone making confident predictions as to how many point were needed, every season is different. You play the game in front of you.

To those with more realistic ambitions.

What purpose does it serve to sack Robins mid season for us to finish mid table?

You either give him the season and see what happens. Part way amicably in the summer and proper planning for new setup if no play offs.

Or you sack him and expect play offs?

Im not sure how I can say every season is different a different way tbh.

If you think 8 points in 31 games is unassailable I disagree.
