I don't think in fairness it's that daft a thing to say. Ben Turner had scored 4 in 14 in the 2010-11 season. Ahead of him, until leaving in 2010, Elliott Ward had scored 14 in 116 games.
Due to a number of circumstances, Wood's only got one this season, and Keogh one in almost 80 appearances. Don't think Cameron has ever scored has he?

I know they don't score any goals but playing with no goalie or defenders might be a bit dodgy
On the Miller situation if you hadn't scored for a few games who would want to play against ?????

I agree they have been poor but like Otis says the only defender that looks threatening is Wood, we just don't have any decent headers of the ball. Some players are just better and more dangerous than others. E.g look at Terry compared to Rio - terry has 26 goals in 371 games + 6 in 72 for England, in contract rio has just 10 goals in 449 games + 3 in 81. Terry is just a better header of the ball than Rio. Vidic also has a much better goalscoring record than Rio - 40 in 366 games.

Anyone remember Fox's goal at Norwich a few years ago? Doubt few players in the side at the moment, let alone defenders, would be capable of that.

The whole team has let us down in this regard...particularly the midfield with their lack of service to the strikers....how many of Mr Coventry's 6 goals have been penalties???

Midfield is particularly shocking.
Can understand the defender thing this year due to the reluctance to throw bodies forwards at times, but there should be so many more goals from the midfielders.
Clingan hardly crosses the half-way line so I can see why he hardly ever bags any.

I'm sure his words were chosen because he doesn't want or need to heap pressure on the forwards for goalscoring at such a crucial time. Its only similar to saying we defend as a team and that the defence need help from the forwards. However I know some of you have your own agendas re Thorn and any quote can be tailored to suit the argument.
As it is, jsut a few extra goals from defence, despite the fowards being goal shy, would possibly have turned a defeat into a draw or a draw into a win and just those extra few points would currently have us the other side of the line and thats apart from relieving pressure in the forwards to score too.

Think you are probably right Rob. I do think our style of play flatters to decieve when it comes to goal scoring though. We keep the ball but we dont actually create many good chances as a team. We tend to rely more on an individual creating for themselves. Whether that is because we are trying not to take risks, lack speed, lack creativity, lack quality, lack a system of play that puts teams under sustained pressure round their box - i suppose is open to debate but its probably a mixture of all that.
As for the defenders scoring, well yes more goals from them would be good - but their main chance of scoring is from corners and free kicks and delivery from both has been generally pretty poor. The return from midfield has been poor for seasons - it isnt just down to AT's management - but this year seems as bad as any, they dont support the strikers well or quickly and hardly ever seem to pick up the second ball.
Have felt all season that we set up to be safe not concede (hasnt worked too well) and do not set up to go out and win games (maybe take a risk or two)

Thorn is quite right to point out that we should have had 3-5 goals from the centre backs, as we did when Ward, Turner or Wood were regulars. The point about delivery is only partly responsible as even an unimpressive cross is usually met by someone's head... but our centre backs rarely get forward or get on the end of them.
Of course we need goals from all areas of the team to succeed. Why is anyone arguing?

You say that but we have what 6-8 corners a games plus 2 or 3 free kicks when the defenders go up - they probably have more chances to score than some of our strikers.
I disagree that goals from defenders are a bonus, you'd expect 5-10 from the defence per season.

Bonus as in their prime function is to defend ........ not expecting not to score and only 1 this season is pretty poor. Would think a reasonable target would be 10 in a season - but that isnt far behind how are midfield do

I agree we don't create enough chances, however we're also not clinical enough - someone of the calibre of King, Copra, etc would have buried the chance that Cody had that was cleared off the line, and also the Platt chance when Clarke crossed to him in the first half v Palace. ROD should have had a hatrick in the first half v Southampton in the Cup. There have been so many instances where we have created but just not taken the chances and that is down to a lack of quality.
Nimely has had 27 shots (13 on, 14 off target) and managed to make only 1 count
In actual fact 8 teams have created less chances than us, yet all of them have scored more goals than us this season.

Last home game, free kick in dangerous position and all our defensive players who could offer any threat were not up in the penaty box, but were left on the half way line.
They ain't going to score if they are not in scoring positions for sure.

Not sure why people are so hard on McSheff. He's scored seven this season and two have been penalties. Furthermore, at least he scores his penalties unlike the efforts from Captain Fantastic and Juke.
