wonder how bad his injury is? Robins says 2 to 3 weeks but he was clapping supporters when he went off. Can you do that when you've got a bad shoulder injury? I've never experienced one.

Nor have I, nor do I know if it's likely to reoccur after the first one. But I am pretty sure if he'd not been injured we'd have won handsomely simply because he knows how to finish

I'm not entirely sure the max and Kelly comparisons are remotely fair

Kelly has been fantastic for the club whereas max was largely ineffective.

More about fans reaction than the players themselves.

Shmmeee talking out of his arse again I see. You need leaders around the place. Not just on the pitch but in the dressing room, on the training ground etc.
As a club captain, you also impact the young lads in the academy by setting a good example and helping guide them in the right direction.
Look at Mark Noble at West Ham. He’s not a regular starter and is probably not likely to start many games. They keep him involved because of his leadership qualities and for the reasons mentioned above

He looked brilliant in his wolves cameo .. hasn't yet taken it into the season.

Tries to be too cute too often , it's been said by so many people it's really hard for us all to be wrong

I thought sheaf one of our best players against Forrest especially in the second half, he wasn't brilliant yesterday, but no one was really. And he isn't going to come across another team that presses with that intensity

I actually thought Barnsley pressed far less than last season .. they look a different side , not in a good way

Not sure you can say they didn’t press first half. Agree with the second but though, just saying that to a Barnsley fan on Twitter.

they've gone from a team who play decent football to a cynical, dirty bunch in less than 3 seasons.

Fair enough , they could have lost 5-1 on another day

They can't keep hoping for that luck all season

You tried to make the point earlier that he was faster. Brennan Johnson was alright, but his pace didn’t go unmatched throughout. Sheaf is slow.

You’re right in that it isn’t just about passing, but we are a team that wants to play progressive football and build patterns of play. To do this you need to be competent on the ball, which Kelly isn’t. 28% long passing success is abysmal. I take your point on his other ‘intangible’ qualities but this is why I’ve been quite passionate in that I’d have moved Kelly on and got someone in the mould of James who has both sides to his game. Obviously the budget hasn’t stretched to that so we are where we are.

If your passing success rate is only 66% in the Championship in a position where you’ll tend to have a fair few options on, it tells me the game is moving too quickly for you. That’s why I don’t think he’s Championship quality.

Re the OP, we will be more than fine this year. I’ve justified it in more detail elsewhere but we’re stronger than last year. Not just signings wise, but we’re a year more experienced (players and management), have retained our key players and Dabo/Rose are back and fit. Dabo is especially important as he’s pivotal to how we play, the WB roles are key in our system and he is/will be one of the best in this league.

Kelly is a decent Championship player and is understated leadership and stability should not be underrated. He is prone to the occasional hoof, and isn’t as cultured as Sheaf/Hamer, but that’s better than being caught/losing possession in the positions he does that in. Hamer and Sheaf are also (fairly, sometimes at least) criticised for their passing, the former for attempting too much and the latter for mistakes in silly positions. We don’t have an all round midfielder - and won’t get one in the pool we’re fishing in.

Saying that, Sheaf has the potential to be the best all rounder. He’s going to be picked out this year as he recycles the ball and isn’t always looking for the Hollywood pass, so won’t be seem by some of our less observant fans.

We’re a decent Championship team and will only improve with the squad we have. Full of potential.

It doesn’t need to be said anymore. If he had an end product, then he most certainly wouldn’t be a City player.

I said on the predictor thread I think we could be scrapping near the bottom depending on further transfers. Given that they are now pretty much done and I don't think we are massively better, I'm still a bit cautious about doing that well until I see us play a few more games.

I don’t think anyone’s expecting him to score every chance, or every other one, but just occasionally would be nice!

The front 3 need to deliver i have no worries with Gyo but a lot is gonna rest on ohares shoulders to deliver consistency, with service I’m sure Waghorn will also deliver,we will get better we pretty much dominated yesterday, second half against Forest also was good

I agree. But even he converted half of the chances he created for himself, I still don’t think he’d be a City player.

Am I the only one who thinks Kelly is a completely different type of player to Sheaf and Hamer?

Ideally you'd like Sheaf and Hamer playing because they're more ball-playing midfielders and more likely to help you control a game. But there will be times where you won't be controlling a game, or towards the end under pressure defending a lead and in those instances Kelly's defensive qualities, leadership and experience would prove invaluable.

So most of the time Sheaf and Hamer to start with Kelly on the bench if we need someone to get stuck in a bit more.

My word there are some mixed opinions on here, less we forget the influence Kelly has on the team when he plays. He has a huge influence on the way we play. I remember last season when he was out injured we struggled to put a win together. When in the team we invariably did much better. He is everywhere from the defense to forward line, and intercepting all points between, reading the game extremely well. He gets in tackles, cuts out through balls, and keeps us in possession. He's also good with the odd ball over the top. Sheaf and Hamer are none of those things. Sheaf's energy is questionable and lack of pace scary, and he has a lot of improvement to do. You can see it in him, but he's still a liability on occasion which he must eradicate. Hamer showed against Barnsley in the second half what a good player he can be. He just needs to be on it 90 minutes.

God, you'll be here all week as he parrots page after page about how Robins is trying to get out of the deal etc.

Probably at some point he was ecstatic as well, just to cover his bases!
