Hamer, O'Hare, Gyokeres Dabo, Sheaf, Godden ...

According to the folk on here recently at least and I've possiblymissed some. In many cases, compelling arguments about why they need a rest or dropping. Unfortunately with limited resources and games coming thick and fast against good opposition we don't have that luxury. Try selecting a side without them all.

We need to patch them up, keep going and ride out the injuries or loss of form. Trust Robins to get it right, stick together and keep supporting them. Will be more ups and downs to come, we'll likely finish where we deserve to and let's hope we can make it to the play offs.

I didn't think there'd be any further comments after the thread title & thought it was where he thought the team was heading

An unusually leveI headed OP. Everyone of our players have been slated on here at some point this season, more often than not with uneccessary vitriol too. It is particularly bad in regard of the midfielders where supporters of Hamer, Sheaf or O'Hare seem to feel they have to slate the other 2 in order to show support for their particular favourite. In reality none of them are as good as their biggest supporters or as bad as their worst critics would have it. Yes they all have weaknesses to their games, but more importantly they all have qualities which have contributed to us having a much better season than any expected, and are all an important part to the team moving forward.

Don’t forget to drop the Manager too and replace with the tough tackling Viveash. Let’s drop the owners too, and most of the fans.

COH let’s himself down in front of goal. Absolutely nobody challenging to start ahead of him though.

Bringing Bright in instead of Patterson is still annoying me

Someone said Bright was only paid £2k a week. I can’t see why we would end up taking a high risk low wage option rather than look elsewhere if that was the case

Hamer just to get over his injury and Dabo needs to play where he knows his game - the others need to just crack on. I wouldn’t mind seeing Walker get a run but don’t think Godden deserves dropping.
MR will squeeze what he can out of them… I am very optimistic that as I nurse my new year day hangover we will be in the top 6.

I wouldn’t listen to a word Rumours says, he’s notoriously economical with the truth.

I'll be honest, I don't know anything about the whole Patterson transfer but you win some and you lose some. No point letting it irk you, our win/loss record when it comes to transfers is definitely an overwhelming success so far.

We have to accept Saturday we were up against a team whose Premiership quality players especially the centre backs showed their class a Gyo as an example is in his first half season in regular first team football still inexperienced he’ll improve I have no doubts about that.

I'm still surprised how often people blame individuals for being crap without ever acknowledging the impact that various systems, styles and opposition game instructions have on individual performance.

Maatsen has barely crossed the halfway line in the 2 games since Kane has come into the side. People have said Kane has to start but Maatsen has clearly been asked to play a more conservative role in order to try and get Kane on the ball in high positions to utilise his crossing in the final 3rd. Part of the logic behind that will also be fear of the opposition - those games have been Bournemouth and West Brom, 2 strong teams in this league, but keeping Maatsen back, in a system that relies very heavily on the wingbacks, has made us very 1 dimensional in the way we attack.

Would quite like us to have a 4-3-1-2 back up option, especially against teams that press hard, as it has variation from but not completely deserting the principles of the 3-5-2:

Sheaf-Kelly-Hamer as a 3 in midfield gives an extra body for a pass from the defence into midfield if the defence are being pressed, as well as a an extra body in midfield to help retain possession when the ball does reach the midfield - at the weekend there were so many passes back to the defence from our DMs due to a lack of better options under pressure.

It also allows O'Hare to pressure higher up the pitch instead of coming into deep midfield to try and win the ball and makes him available for a progressive pass higher up the pitch when the midfield 3 do have possession. This is something we've missed since the Waghorn injury - we're not winning the ball back or forcing mistakes in dangerous areas of the pitch.

The fullbacks can still get forward, knowing we have an extra man to cover centrally, and Kelly can drop into that central defence to make a 3 if we do get caught with the fullbacks up the pitch. His natural game is to play very close the centre backs anyway.

I certainly feel the formation better plays to our strengths than playing Dabo at RCB and Maatsen defensively.

I agree with most but not all of what you've written. I don't think Maatsen has been told to stay back to accommodate Kane further up the pitch in the last 2 games. He is just having a dip in form and as you say hes been up against quicker and better quality players who have pushed him back. Defending isn't his strength, which is why he is having to work harder. Teams see him as the weak link defensively and are starting to target him.

With 2 defensive midfielders sitting in front of a back 3, both wingbacks should have license to get forward. First half Saturday, they had both been pushed back, and all of west broms attacks were coming down maatsens side.

I do agree with the need to have a plan b and 1 that allows us to get an extra man in midfield. We could also play o'hare off the left and Jones off the right cutting in in a 433, or even big vik who likes to drift in off the left handside anyway.
