Venus has said he has been made the best offer we can possibly make, waiting to hear back from him.

Fingers crossed. A year or two ago I wouldn't have been that bothered but on the whole he was a great player for us last season.

Indifferent to him staying, IMO hides in too many games will be one of the higher wage earners as well so will free up funds. If he is as good as many fans think he is why is he not in the championship ?.

Coventry City are playing a waiting game to see if they can re-sign player of the year John Fleck.

Sky Blues technical director Mark Venus admits the 24-year-old midfielder deserves a crack at Championship football but remains hopeful that the Scot will return in the belief that he can achieve his ambitions at the Ricoh Arena.

“We’ve made him the best offer we can,” said Venus. “He needs to make the most out of his earning potential while he can. Whether the market wants to give him what he feels he is worth is a different matter, of course.

“But John has done really well, found a position that suits him and he’s a good footballer, undoubtedly, and I think he has to play in the right team to suit him. I think he deserves a chance at a higher level but it’s up to the market whether someone takes him.”

Asked if there is a cut-off point when the club turn their attention elsewhere, the 49-year-old said: “We have to continually evaluate the situation and get a feel for it.

“This month is really difficult because players are all still contracted to their last clubs, people are on holiday, clubs are not back for training yet and if you’re a good player you want more and if you are in the Championship you want to stay there.

“This is a really tough month to get things over the line but when the players start coming back for pre-season I think things will really start to take shape.

“We’ll be getting phone calls from agents saying can you do this or that and it will take shape day by day.”

One player who is still very much on Tony Mowbray’s radar is former Sky Blues Academy graduate Gael Bigirimana who has a year left on his deal at newly relegated Newcastle United.

“Everything revolves around John,” said Venus, who expects Vladimir Gadzhev to compete in the midfield positions next season.

“Gael has another year at Newcastle and I have spoken to them but I haven’t done anything concrete, just got a position from them and then it’s up to the gaffer really. I think he would like to see where John ends up before he makes any moves in those positions.

“Gael is a good pro, he came and had a little bit of a frustrating time and didn’t get enough minutes on the pitch as he would have liked.

“But Gael has got talent and he’s only young. He’s played 20-odd games in the Premier League. He left this club in the Championship and he ticks boxes to get the job done in this league but, again, it’s up to the gaffer.”

Will we get compo for him as he's 24 and we've offered a contract? Or is that just youth/academy players?

surely it's all about building a competitive squad for the season,
JF i'd hope would want to be part of that,
& with the careful addition of 4/5 players on a permanent basis,
+ the owners committing to the idea, promotion should be the aim

Whatever it is could be better spent elsewhere!

Doesn't sound positive with regards to Fleck hope it's resolved and he moves on soon!

I'd be up for giving him a chance to get his career back on track but there's enough risk there for it not to be a fee. Unless we can do something like he plays a certain number of games before a fee is due.

Didn't realise he had a year left. I thought he was a free agent. I think for free he would be OK.

He's on decent wages there isn't he? Would they have to give him a pay off to release him or could both sides just agree to walk away?

Can't imagine they'd get many offers for him so they might just be trying it on. Leave it a month and see what they say then.

Hes on about £20k PW. Thats £1m in wages for thr next year. That's a lot of buy out, that's why I can see Newcastle holding out to see if they can get £100-200k transfer fee to help pay him off.

Fleck : whatever we've offered, he'll be offered more elsewhere and will leave .
Biggi : if he's free I'd say yes , if there's a fee I'd say no.

Guess Bigi would want to hold out can't blame him.

Maybe a case of Newcastle paying £15k & City £5k a week.

I would imagine, that would place him firmly as the highest paid player at the club on around 10-12.5% of our first teak wage bill!!! How mental is that!

Yep ridiculous but suppose for Newcastle saves them £250k than I f he sits the year out and then City get him a 2-3 year deal so Newcastle effectively saving that money on his final year.

I dunno sounds like something that used to happen on football manager haha.

Or that Bigi is unwilling to walk away from the final year of his contract there.

Figures quoted about Bigi earnings are miles over actual so may be possible to resolve if NUFC pay him up as Villa did with Jc
Suspect Fleck may end up back at Rangers

I thought he want to play at a higher level to be honest. You may be right though.

Chance to fight for a title you'd think, maybe pick up a trophy or two... still be 26 in a couple of years to get a move somewhere else if he does well.

I dunno, it's hard to tell with Fleck. People always mention how he trains well etc, but can't get away from the nagging feeling he coasts a little. If he goes to Rangers it wouldn't disprove that really.

Not sure his ability would take him much higher to be honest, Rangers level
compared to ours is debatable.
They certainly have the Big Club feel about them though, ie stadium, tradition
Fans, passion etc.
Would also take him home, so all and all very possible. IMHO

If he stays I'd like to see him play much further up the pitch.

I'd also like to keep Bigi but not for a fee and not for big wages.

The average salary in League One is approx 70K, that is more like £1500/week, that means the highest paid players at the clubs with bigger budgets might be on say £3000/week tops.

So is it 23 and under, or 24 and under? Like U12's football teams have 12 year olds playing for them.
