Coming out of international retirement, to play for England in a farewell game v USA at Wembley next month
Is he? That's very nice of us to not look forwards and go backwards just to appease a player and massage his ego.
Apparently ticket sales for the November Thursday night friendly v the mighty USA aren’t as great as The FA had hoped, I wonder if that’s got owt to do with it? Even cap cheats can’t give their tickets away for this one.
Yeah, just found that out. Odd to award him another cap for that though. Could have probably had a world 11 or suchlike. Have we ever done such a thing before, offered another cap to a retired player at international level?
It’s the right thing to do. Should’ve been done a couple of years ago and it’s a shame it’s not against a bigger nation though. Just hope it doesn’t end up being like Podoski’s testimonial last year. He was subbed off and is still walking round the Westfalenstadion waving at the crowd now.
They going to award the standard testimonial penalty for him to take? Should get Francis Jeffers to play as well to see if he can add to his 1 cap and 1 goal as he debuted with Rooney v Australia!
Not really a proper game though is it? It's like saying Olly murs is an international for playing in soccer aid
It’s no different for us having a friendly next summer for Doyle’s testimonial or like we have in the past for other players.
Is it being classed as a game where players will get caps or is it purely an exhibition game? Shame somebody (maybe Callum Wilson) will miss out on a debut/cap.
It’s a friendly. He’s our all time top scorer and always gave his all for his country (probably at the the detriment of his career). As I said it should’ve happened two years ago and I hope it doesn’t descend into a circus like Terry, Podolski, etc.
Marketing at its best they haven’t picked the squad but picked a bloke who has retired. I am glad I won’t be watching it
It's not even much of a friendly, it's a charity match like Soccer Aid. It's going to be up there with John Terry coming off in the 26th minute.
It should be a normal England friendly with caps awarded, with the proceeds going to Rooney's foundation. I don't see why Rooney has to be in the squad, he could come to the match, do a speech on the pitch before the game and collect the cheque.
No problem with that. Think it needs to be one or the other though. It can't be a normal England match and then start messing with the squad for non-footballing reasons.
Yep I don't mind the sentiment but this shouldn't be a capped game, its no different to soccer aid in its intentions. Why would clubs want to risk their players on this type of game?? Nonsense in my view...
He isn't retired. He is playing in the USA and quite well too, although he did miss a penalty the other day. I don't begrudge him one last farewell appearance. He will probably only play for part of the match. He is England's record goal-scorer, although I rate Michael Owen, Gary Lineker and Jimmy Greaves much higher.
You’re right. IMO he deserves the farewell. Some doubt his performances in tournaments but for example when it comes to the Euros only 3 players in history have scored more than him at the finals. Those being Platini, Cristiano Ronaldo and Shearer.
Does anyone really care whether he turns out or not? If he plays ‘good luck’ if not ‘so what’. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
He's only done it for this one game hasn't he? I have no problems with him raising money for his foundation, but they could agve easily set up a charity match or a vs a world 11 etc. Don't think this has ever happened before has it?
I meant for England, CJ. Oh well, it is what it is. I find it a bit odd, but let's hope cash is raised formhis foundation.
If you find Rooney playing one last game for England odd, I hope a UFO never lands in your vicinity. There are a lot odder things, like a guy I saw on the bus last week. By the way, I'm adding something from your post to the 'things that annoy you' thread. Try to guess what it is before going to look.
Yeah, hilarious, Gazbola, but, Wayne Rooney retired from international football and we have never, ever done this before. Surely that in itself by definition makes it odd. It's not the normal thing to do.
You may also wish to check on the definition of odd. 'Different to what is usual'. This isn't usual and therefore is odd.
Random - FA will not give money to Wayne Rooney fund The FA aren't actually donating anything, just letting fans and people fundraise at the game with buckets.
