Has just reinforced the cruelness and luckiness factor involved with it all.

Derby today had a very cruel deflection that gifted Hull a goal, Brighton last night lost a number of players to injury and in the end were playing with 10 men because they had, had to use up all their 3 subs....

And now, Barnsley had a clearly perfect goal disallowed for offside when the bloke was ONSIDE by a country mile.

So much can hinge on one tiny decision and suddenly your dreams can be gone in a puff of smoke.

Automatics next season for us please.

And in the half time break, the Sky team have looked at the goal not given and you see the linesman put up his flag and then a couple of seconds later speak into his headset and say 'Have I got that right?'

He's not come out for the second half. Apparently he has a 'calf strain.' :thinking about:

More of a worry is the shit standard of the non league sides battling it out for a place in league one.Playing on an allotment kind of suits the shocking standard of football on display

A non league team would take a bigger following than Walsall could muster today.

Automatic 10th place macca. Joking apart people say they would take playoff success rather than 2nd. Personally I would rather have it safe a boring!

Yes autos next season please...the thing I hate most about Div 1 is the appalling standard of the officials. It doesn't matter which game it is, or at what stage of the season, a shocking decision can determine a clubs entire future for many seasons. It reminds me that the first game of the season is as important as the last, so we have to hit the ground running again next season...

Rubbish! The shocking decisions affect all teams equally. And we make our own bad luck. Even when the shocking decisions favour us, we don't have a specialist penalty-taker to take advantage of them.

If the Accrington vs Wimbledon AFC playoff game on Sky was in any way representative of League Two football then it's in a sorry state.

The commentator said that Wimbledon has the third lowest playing budget for L2, 100K below the average: brought home the income disparity between the four divisions.

Been saying all season that the standards of the officials in league one has been shocking this season. I go and watch Rugby Town in non league a couple of times a season usually and I honestly can't see that the standards of the officials isn't any worse in non league.

So you would advocate the idea that the appalling standard of officials should continue regardless, and that their part has nothing to do with the outcome of a result. So please explain the introduction of goal line technology....why is it necessary if the officials decision are of no consequence??

Completely agree Otis, autos have to be the aim next season. It used to make me smile when we had threads start asking " autos or play off final" and the amount of people that chose Wembley always surprised me. The play offs are a complete lottery, and the best team over the seasom rarely goes up.

Think the question may have been a tad loaded though, as I think the question was would you rather go up automatically or through the play-offs and the key words there are 'go up!'

If we KNEW we were going up I would take the play-offs every time!!

Shocking decisions can indeed even themselves up and affect every side, but that's no good if your shocking decision comes in a play-off game which could be all but instant knock out!

A shocking decision like that linesman giving offside in the Barnsley game could end your season right then and there in an instant.

Luckily Barnsley were far too strong for Walsall, so it didn't matter.

Same as lucky deflections and freak goals. They may even up over a 46 game season, but if one goes against you in a play-off game that might prove to end your campaign.

Be great to get in the play-offs, but automatics has to be our aim. Would save a hell of potential anguish and gnashing of teeth.

There should not be play offs. The top three should go up because they deserve to go up.

I see your point but that would make football so boring. The play offs add excitement to the game and gives teams a chance of progressing that wouldn't necessarily be a top 3 team

Would you still have the view if we finished 6th on last day of season and won the play offs?

Playoffs are brilliant.

I did wonder yesterday the theory of the 3rd & 4th place team picking home or away advantage first as an option? Or even the 3rd place team picks the side they want to face, they do this in Rugby League & it's not necessary the lowest rank team picked first as they may be the form side etc.

With 24 teams in the league you have to have play offs or there wouldn't be any thing to play for for at least half the teams every season.

A fairer way if doing it would be a round robin mini league then either top goes up or the top 2 play a final.

With so many grey areas a lot of onus is down to interpretation by the officials who hardly have a fucking clue at best, I used to be on the executive committee for Nuneaton Saturday soccer, I was always bringing up the subject of some fucking herbert dressed in black being useless...got shot down everytime. I spoke on talksport once to Cascarino and some other twat who I can't remember their name, maybe Durham, I said the football authorities should stipulate that to be a senior referee ie officiate a football league game or premier game the referee should have minimum played 'league' football, this would keep the lower league players in the game and they would have an understanding of how the game is played and be able to judge tackles etc that are deliberate or fair old toothless said ...won't work and cut me off...fucking twat.... It really pisses me off that these incompetent idiots are costing clubs and managers money and their jobs...Rant over...and a PS automatics couldn't stand the agony of missing out having been within touching distance

Just imagine playing Sheffield United in the play offs with some mythical offence being committed by one of our players and they get their compulsory penalty and are promoted or we are playing Swindon Town and are winning 2 nil with 3 minutes of extra time left and they get their inevitable 3 late goals and are promoted. I could not handle it at all. It is automatic promotion for me....or nothing.

To get promotion via the playoffs has to be the ultimate, to lose would be unbearable. I would love us to go up via them, and win the JPT as well. Two Wembley visits in a season would take away some of the pain from all the recent pain and lack of top 6 finish in 47 years...

I'd love to get into the playoffs just because of it being 400 years since a top six finish, but I think I'd hate every second of the actual playoffs until it was over. Don't have the nerve for it.

I don't think I could handle it either. Sometimes when my national team has had matches go to penalties I have to turn it off or I'd have cardiac arrest!

I used to like that old system of one of the relegation teams playing one of the promotion/play off teams.

They still use that system in Germany.

I've always thought the play offs were a bit unfair, as they offered no reward to the teams finishing higher, sometimes 5-6 wins ahead of their opponents. I'd follow similar to the Super League system in rugby, all ties over 1 leg:

Match 1 - 6th place away at 5th
Match 2 - winner match 1 away at 4th
Final - winner match 2 vs 3rd at Wembley

I think they're quite unfair and reward teams of the moment, rather than those who have shown consistency. Look at Walsall, as good as buried after 90 minutes of football - despite finishing 3rd and 10 points clear of the team that will most likely go into the final.

I agree with some though that they are exciting and do give hope to a lot of clubs, who's season would be virtually over with half a dozen games still to play...and it's probably the only way we'll have a chance to get out of this league. Will we ever be top two material, seeing how we generally start well and nose dive after Christmas?

I would be happy because this are the rules and we were promoted. But deep down I would still feel the third place team deserved it not us, because they finished third in the league, a competition that is run over many months.
Then purely for money and TV it reverts to a cup competition between two sides. How would you feel if we finished third on goal difference with the team in second. 15 points ahead of the sixth placed team who we had done the double over, only for them to get promoted. My view is the three best teams should get promoted and the league system is the fairest way.

What about the bloody horror of our lot in a penalty shoot out!!! Doesn't bear thinking about. Is it possible to arrange for our opponents to take their penalties blindfolded to even up the contest......Ha ha...From what I have seen this year I reckon our opponents would still win.

Winning the JPT seems to give many sides the boost they need to perform at the tail end of the season, so lets give this cup a really go next year and see if we can gain the impetus we regularly seem to lack at the business end of the season.
