Ask in the store they have a free model every month and one for new starters. It is definitely expensive for what it is for sure. I guess they have to factor in keeping the shops running to provide a space for nerds to congregate and play into the cost of the products?!There's some very good videos on youtube teaching how the game works. It seems fairly straightforward.
I been a couple of times to the store/website and just overwhelmed by the choices on offer and then put off by the price tbh.
Just noticed this thread kick back into life. I got my lad a basic starter pack a while back. He's been keen to get into it. We build them together and I've been doing most of the painting. Really enjoying it, results are a bit hit or miss but it's nice to have something to dip in and out of.
The Warhammer stores have a nice free scheme called Battle honours. A booklet where you can track your progress and collect stamps to get rewards if you show them your progress on stuff. Part of that is getting a tutorial in the store from staff. Did that the other week, my lad loved it but it's a bit over my head!

Appreciate it's less embarrassing to do that stuff under the guise of taking your kid with youbut they are an inclusive bunch... the staff always ask if I want the free mini of the month too if I'm there... They know the score! Looks like you'd get most your stamps straight away.

These are the minis done so far, I brutalized the dry brushing! Can feel the love fading from my wife's eyes as I try and justify dropping £140 on a set of speed paints
Ha she's fine with it really, I've neglected doing anything creative for years so good to get back into something. As you said it's easy to get into a bit of a flow and burn an evening away. Also good to have something away from football and screens to do with my lad.Ah the benefits of being in control of the finances
I said to the missus it’s like those adult colouring books that were popular a bit ago, just a nice meditative activity you can put some music or podcast on and get into flow. I can go two or three hours before I’ve realised it.

Realised my eyes are terrible, having to wear two pairs of glasses at once to see any detail. I want to try a few different techniques. Speed paints look fun and means it might take a bit less time to get the basics done then go back in and add more details.
Went to the UK Games Expo at the NEC on a whim yesterday and it rekindled something dormant in me since I was about 11, I’ve suddenly got the urge to paint a miniature despite not having touched it for 30+ years. Maybe even actually learn to play the game.
Anyone willing to admit they’re into this stuff and can point me in a good starting direction?
No, he likes RawhammerI heard Roy Hodgson loves to play this game.

Dangerous, my lad worked out you can get Warhammer sets from CEX so has been busily trading in old switch games and has amassed 3 combat patrols which he's now bugging me to paint!
CEX seems a lot cheaper, a £100 ork patrol was £75... I did question where they get the stock, apparently they are second hand but they only take sealed?!?
Finally finished his Orks, came out ok still learning but liking the speed paints

Yeah I've noticed the independent shops are a lot cheaper, weird strategy not to discount in the main stores.Any independent shop will be around 20% cheaper than GW. Was talking to the guy who runs my local shop and he was explaining that GE won’t discount but don’t stop others.
Most will order what you want in, that’s what I do. Order when I’m in one weekend and pick up the next. Lots of sprue only stuff on eBay too. I got some space marines cheap that way, think it was a split set.
Cheapest way seems to be buying badly painted models but then you’ve got to strip them and they’re probably also badly built so I’ve avoided that.
Are they dumping old / unwanted stock into other stores or is it literally the same thing but cheaper?Any independent shop will be around 20% cheaper than GW. Was talking to the guy who runs my local shop and he was explaining that GE won’t discount but don’t stop others.

British miniature wargames maker Games Workshop on Tuesday reported a 33.4% surge in half-year profit, helped by robust demand for its popular Warhammer series.
Games Workshop reported an operating profit of 126.1 million pounds ($154 million) for the six months ended Dec. 1, 2024, versus 94.5 million pounds an year ago.
Seems the same stock to me, maybe there is a lag on the newest releases but I've not noticed. Are they dumping old / unwanted stock into other stores or is it literally the same thing but cheaper?
Obviously working for them as this was in the news a couple of days ago

you can see how GW are minted when you consider they charge nearly £5 for an 18ml pot of paint
Can you get knock offs like you can with Lego. You should all get together and do a bulk order from China if you don't mind ignoring the forced labour and genocide.
