Warhammer (2 Viewers)

There's some very good videos on youtube teaching how the game works. It seems fairly straightforward.

I been a couple of times to the store/website and just overwhelmed by the choices on offer and then put off by the price tbh.
Ask in the store they have a free model every month and one for new starters. It is definitely expensive for what it is for sure. I guess they have to factor in keeping the shops running to provide a space for nerds to congregate and play into the cost of the products?!

Just noticed this thread kick back into life. I got my lad a basic starter pack a while back. He's been keen to get into it. We build them together and I've been doing most of the painting. Really enjoying it, results are a bit hit or miss but it's nice to have something to dip in and out of.

The Warhammer stores have a nice free scheme called Battle honours. A booklet where you can track your progress and collect stamps to get rewards if you show them your progress on stuff. Part of that is getting a tutorial in the store from staff. Did that the other week, my lad loved it but it's a bit over my head!

Appreciate it's less embarrassing to do that stuff under the guise of taking your kid with you 😆 but they are an inclusive bunch... the staff always ask if I want the free mini of the month too if I'm there... They know the score! Looks like you'd get most your stamps straight away.

These are the minis done so far, I brutalized the dry brushing! Can feel the love fading from my wife's eyes as I try and justify dropping £140 on a set of speed paints

Ah the benefits of being in control of the finances 😂

I said to the missus it’s like those adult colouring books that were popular a bit ago, just a nice meditative activity you can put some music or podcast on and get into flow. I can go two or three hours before I’ve realised it.

There’s a lot of very good 3D files out there it seems as well if you wanted an excuse for a 3D printer you could probably girl math that it’s cheaper in the long run.

Ha she's fine with it really, I've neglected doing anything creative for years so good to get back into something. As you said it's easy to get into a bit of a flow and burn an evening away. Also good to have something away from football and screens to do with my lad.

Realised my eyes are terrible, having to wear two pairs of glasses at once to see any detail. I want to try a few different techniques. Speed paints look fun and means it might take a bit less time to get the basics done then go back in and add more details.

Yeah I’m trying speed paints now, did a painting workshop where I painted a guy in a couple of hours with speed paints and it sold me on the process. Especially if you don’t want to spend hours highlighting and everything to get a nice result.

Bit of a learning process but like drybrushing you can get really nice effects really easily. Just zenithal primed a few and going to have a proper go this week.

Never my favourite Peter Gabriel song and I digress slightly to his days when he was still in Genesis but that live performance of ‘I know what I like’ - Where the rest of the band are waiting pensively for him to complete his pre vocal antics is a YouTube classic.

Went to the UK Games Expo at the NEC on a whim yesterday and it rekindled something dormant in me since I was about 11, I’ve suddenly got the urge to paint a miniature despite not having touched it for 30+ years. Maybe even actually learn to play the game.

Anyone willing to admit they’re into this stuff and can point me in a good starting direction?

Tbf, I never played the game but was pretty good at paining them and Airfix models.

Glue and paint definitely didn't change me 🥴🤣

Getting more popular in schools. I stopped by a few times to watch games.

It sounds great to principle. I understand people enjoying painting the characters etc

But in action it's a boring ass game that you need a fucking app to double check shit on every 2 seconds and it's too geeky it's unhealthy. A friend went to a Warhammer convention and took a pic and it looked like alot of virgins lol(not that I'm Casanova!)

Always been intrigued with it and never had the money as a kid sostarted to look into it more recently. With young kids I thought I’m never going to have time to paint it anything but ended up getting a slightly out of date version of the 40k Core book. Like an annual full of pictures and lore and sort of scratched the itch. Also been playing some of the video games, Space Marine 1 and 2 and the fist 2 Dawn of War games are good.

When I’ve got a bit more time think I’ll get around to painting a few miniatures. As Shmmeee said above it seems like it’s something you can really zone out too.

Anyway glad to see some big time nerds of the forum.

Oh also, there was an Amazon Prime series called Secret Level recently. Anime type shorts based on video games, there’s a Space Marine one which is worth a watch, only 15-20 mins or something.

Dangerous, my lad worked out you can get Warhammer sets from CEX so has been busily trading in old switch games and has amassed 3 combat patrols which he's now bugging me to paint!

CEX seems a lot cheaper, a £100 ork patrol was £75... I did question where they get the stock, apparently they are second hand but they only take sealed?!?

Finally finished his Orks, came out ok still learning but liking the speed paints

They look fantastic. Magic madhouse has good discounts on stuff, but you can't trade in with them.

Any independent shop will be around 20% cheaper than GW. Was talking to the guy who runs my local shop and he was explaining that GE won’t discount but don’t stop others.

Most will order what you want in, that’s what I do. Order when I’m in one weekend and pick up the next. Lots of sprue only stuff on eBay too. I got some space marines cheap that way, think it was a split set.

Cheapest way seems to be buying badly painted models but then you’ve got to strip them and they’re probably also badly built so I’ve avoided that.

Yeah I've noticed the independent shops are a lot cheaper, weird strategy not to discount in the main stores.

Not looked on eBay, good shout I'll have a look what's available.

Only using CEX as we can trade in old unused games and tech for credit. Lads made up he got rid of a load of mid Switch games he's not touched in over a year and made over £200.

Both of my (great) nephews have recently got into Warhammer so birthdays/Christmas have become easy with WH tokens as presents.
I’ve been a regular at Warwick Auctions for about 15 years now - I love buying and selling. About six or seven years ago I bought a load of figures in really tidy and professional looking plastic storage/display cases, along with a few small boxed games.
It’s not my thing but I would date them around 1990’s maybe even a little earlier.
I was even impressed with the skilled sculpting of the foam blocks to create the recess to sit the various shaped pieces in the cases!
The detailed painting was something else although I found out that the unpainted pieces can fetch more.
I paid a fair sum for them but did OK with resale on eBay.

Are they dumping old / unwanted stock into other stores or is it literally the same thing but cheaper?

Obviously working for them as this was in the news a couple of days ago
British miniature wargames maker Games Workshop on Tuesday reported a 33.4% surge in half-year profit, helped by robust demand for its popular Warhammer series.

Games Workshop reported an operating profit of 126.1 million pounds ($154 million) for the six months ended Dec. 1, 2024, versus 94.5 million pounds an year ago.

Seems the same stock to me, maybe there is a lag on the newest releases but I've not noticed.

you can see how GW are minted when you consider they charge nearly £5 for an 18ml pot of paint 😄

It’s the same thing. I can buy anything GW at 20% off the shop just orders it in using their trade account. I guess they need independent shops to thrive? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Actually even more expensive (slightly) but I’ve just got some Pro Acryl paints and they’re miles ahead of GW for coverage and finish imo.

Can you get knock offs like you can with Lego. You should all get together and do a bulk order from China if you don't mind ignoring the forced labour and genocide.

I mean you can just 3D print the things but the quality outside of GW is pretty poor. Temu shit tends to be some guy with a 3D printer. Also you can’t rock up to a GW tournament with an army full of snide space marines.
