Went to the UK Games Expo at the NEC on a whim yesterday and it rekindled something dormant in me since I was about 11, I’ve suddenly got the urge to paint a miniature despite not having touched it for 30+ years. Maybe even actually learn to play the game.

Anyone willing to admit they’re into this stuff and can point me in a good starting direction?

It was inevitable.

I expect some Roy Hodgson references along the way too.

never tried Warhammer or D&D or anything like that which is weird really as I'm 100% geek and its exactly the sort of thing people would expect me to be into

there used to be Geek Retreat in town but I believe they got booted out by the council so you'd probably have to head to Brum to find something similar.

There's a shop in town. Have to admit, I have been looking at getting into myself lately. Would be a great little hobby imo. Keep me in the loop if you find anything interesting.

Popped in and they’ve sold me a starter kit with a few paints. I’ll see how I get on.

Friend of mine is into warhammer in a big way. 3d prints the figures and paints them. Was also at NEC on Friday (struggling to get round in his wheelchair it was so busy), and went to their place in Nottingham a few months ago. He’s disabled and can’t work, so has the time to spend on his hobby.

I need to dig my old ones out of my mums loft and flog them. Half worried I'll see them and get into it.

I Saw 4 teenage emo/goths sword fighting with large sticks yesterday. I think they had just come back from there too.

I go down rabbit hole YouTube sessions watching Swedish blokes painting Warhammer miniatures (Squidmar),. The painting side has always appealed to me. Always used to look in the games workshop and white dwarf magazine as a kid wishing I had the funds to get into it properly.

Had a mates brother who was bang into it. Back then I'm pretty sure it was all stinky enamel paint and turps. Lot easier now with quality acrylics

I used to collect and paint warhammer. Back when the shop used to be upstairs in cathedral lanes. Never played it and wouldn't know where to even start but used to enjoy collecting and painting them. I found it really relaxing. I used to collect the space marines and paint them in blue and yellow. Are they still a team?

Yeah that’s an UltraMarine I’ve painted. Same as you I have no idea about the game. Watched an intro youtube video last night and am none the wiser. From what I’ve read Warhammer is a miniatures company that’s like “oh guess we’d better create a game to go with them” and other games are better. I’m just here for the painting tho.

I collected and painted the original Warhammer when I was a child...the idea of the game was always better than the reality of it.

Same, I used to get the Lord of the Rings Warhammer weekly magazine when I was younger which came with free models, but would ruin them instantly as I wasn't a patient enough painter and then never bothered to actually learn how to play it.

Remember it being expensive enough at the time, I bet it's extortionate now

So you just buy the figures, paint them and stick them on a shelf? Not sure I've got the time, patience or shelf space for that.

Similar to a few here I tried to get into it with the space Warhammer but I found the game itself impenetrable and without wanting to generalise too much, the people who were into it were a bit too into it for my liking. Ended up painting the figures and just using them as toys which I enjoyed a lot more. I did however like the similar but more board gamey ones they did with Heroquest and Blood Bowl, got on better there.

I was reminded of it all when I saw that Heroquest was being remade but then I saw the price, £100? What the fuck!

I had that and Space Crusade made by MB too. Still complicated but a bit less impenetrable.

Didn't know they were getting so collectable. Pushing £350 complete.. I'll keep my eye out in the charity shops now!

My absolute favourite miniatures spin off product were Citadel Combat Cards. Way more my level as they were basically Top Trumps loved them and now fighting an urge to scour eBay and re buy them.

Was looking at a game at the expo at the weekend and thought “oh that looks cool” base game was £250! A lot of this stuff is low production run I guess but even so!

Just trying to find stuff to keep me off screens tbh. Planning another kid and want to be as low screen generally as possible.
