He forced the goalkeeper into a great save tbf but yes we do need to try and offload him

That's it really
At his stage of his career he wants to be playing even if it's at a lower level

And don't forget the save the keeper made when it came off his back from the defenders clearance, I actually said to my mate, that's two shots on target for the Wags

The thinking was probably to get experienced players on to avoid a thrashing
Not what I'd have done but Robins knows more than me

When he first came on I didn't see the benefit but you make a good point. A long with not turning it into a thrashing, is it really a game you want to bring a youngster into?

I do think he needs to move on if we can. When we play at our best it's with high intensity, closing down right up the pitch. Waghorn doesn't seem to have the pace or fitness to do that. I think that's the reason why Walker wasn't given game time.

I agree, Robins is our king. I trust his judgement over mine or anyone on here.

I may be wrong but would think the signing of Waghorn was instigated more by Robins and not the recruitment department

Bournemouth were sat very deep though. Feel like Tavares would be most effective with teams higher up the pitch whereas Waghorn is more of a link up striker.

But yeah for the rest of this season I'd much rather see Tavares getting minutes than Waghorn, particularly if the latter is leaving at the end of the season.

If he’s prepared to take a wage cut that would be a big bonus

If Waghorn was to leave we are left with Victor (expected to leave), Walker (struggling in league one) and Godden (injured more than he’s fit). Would we then need to bring in 2/3 more strikers?

If Waghorn goes out on loan we’ll still be paying a percentage of his wages anyway. Id keep him

I guess the plan is to keep Gyokeres and if necessary sell Hamer and o hare. Walker will have to see his contract out but may come good

People talk about the January window and SISU not investing, but our summer transfer window wasn't really sharp enough. Players like Waghorn and Bright have been a major let down. The two Chelsea loanees a mixed bag too.

I think dropping Walker after he scored 2 in 2 at Blackburn and Preston killed him tbh. I agree he could come good

You can’t call JCS and Maartsen a mixed bag. Both very good players. I’d take JCS on a free and Maartsen back on loan in a heart beat. Bright was a gamble as cover for OHare but it didn’t come off …. Waggy was a strange signing at the time and hasn’t got the legs for our type of football

@Skybluebeliever hinted that Waghorn could go out loan next season
Maybe with the other club paying all or part of his salary
Difficult to see any other outcome
Jobello and Hillsner were exiled to the U23s this season in the hope that they'd get fed up and ask for their contracts to be terminated
It didn't work
Jobello was eventually paid off and Hillsner was loaned to a German 3rd tier club who can only be paying part of his wages at best
Let's be honest, what would we do in their position?

Was quite a unique cameo from Waghorn yesterday.

Had that one excellent effort which, lets be honest, nobody else in our squad could pull off & also played one exquisite ball over the top for Gyok that he really should have done better with. That's coupled with a couple of really loose touches & even fouling Gyökeres at one point!

What I see is a technically very capable player who has completely lost his way after injury/illness & no doubt now unhappy with his situation.

It doesn't look like it's going to work out for him here but fair play to him if he's going to push for a move, he's a good honest pro who wants to play. Many others would just down tools & happily pick up a wage to do nothing.

The anticipation and technique for the volley did show a glimpse of the player he once was

If that volley goes in the top corner we're probably all saying today 'what a wonderful finish, that's what he's capable of, maybe he's worth keeping next season'

Small margins!

I think the penalty miss at Barnsley was a turning point for Vic and Waghorn
If Waghorn had taken it and scored who knows but Vic missing seemed to make him better , the next game against Blackpool he was immense and carried it on

Walker did not get on again yesterday for Pompey for the third game in a row. I’m not sure where he goes from here

I honestly see a good goal scorer in him, and would happily see him back in the-fold, but the club clearly need to work on his confidence.

The loan out was to get him scoring goals at a lower level with a manager he knows to get a good fee in the summer rather than him being in the plans I think, unfortunately it’s been a disaster both clubs.

I think the mental side needs to be looked at first re confidence etc.
I honestly don’t think Portsmouth have really sorted that issue and have probably made it far worse.

ironically that penalty miss and subsequent loss is the game I’m eyeing up that cost us the play offs.

should have won that game by a mile

Waghorn gives me the impression of a someone who's trying to do the "right things", but is past his best. He shows positive commitment and has great technique with his left foot.
However, he's not got great speed which means he struggles for space. If he got a move back to Derby in L1 it might suit him?

I don't see Walker being here next season unless it's as 4th choice bench warmer, getting 5 or 10 mins here and there. Which I'm sure he doesn't want.

If Tavares had hit that volley yesterday we'd have sold 20,000 season tickets this morning.

JCS has made 28 appearances this season. His injury record is not good and given how tight our budget it is, we should be cautious about trying to sign him as this is a reoccurring theme with him. Maatsen is very hit and miss and to be honest I find him quite underwhelming. He is still very young and you can see that he has some talent there, but I wouldn´t go as far as saying they have both been a roaring success. As I said, mixed bag.

With Walker he just needs this season to end, go away and have a good Summer break, and put this season behind him. Come next pre season he can then start again and treat it as a fresh start and a fresh opportunity. Hopefully if he stays injury free and can get his confidence up he might yet play his part for us. Much depends on his own outlook of course, and whether he has it in him to do that.

Thought Waghorn looked quite a lot more energetic yesterday and was trying to get more involved, but we just couldn't get the ball off them after their third. The volley and that lofted pass to Gyokeres's feet was impressive.

Shame it hasn't worked out and just looks like covid/age might have caught up with him
