The right signing at unfortunately the wrong time. Was exactly the right sort of signing we needed with Championship know how when we had not long come back up. Didn’t work out that way and wish him all the best.

I’ve said it before until his shoulder injury he was okay but with that and a bit of covid he never seemed to get anything like his form back, but I wish him the best.

It’s why I never ever buy the “as long as you give it your all” line when it comes to football

we’ve had many a people who have bust a gut and unfortunately not been upto the grade and have been slagged off for it - As I said as a signing it hasn’t worked but I remember Waghorn getting booed onto the pitch at Hull at the start of this season and it was embarrassing

Very few, which is funny as a lot of those people that didn't are the usual suspects berating other people for their opinions.

SBT has hit the matrix in the last few weeks.

I don’t think there were tbh.

We are a development club with what Boddy described as a “Brentford Model” aspiration.

Most sensible people think that signing a full international in their early 20’s is better than signing a 31 year old with no resale value.

Said it at the time abd will say again:

Strange signing. Never going to get a fee for him and not suited to our style of play.

That said, good luck to him

While I agree re. Paterson age and little re-sale value wise to get to be a “Brentford “ apart from up and coming decent young players you do need a sprinkle of experience and older heads. Matty James was a good example of that, did well here for a short time, did a job we stayed up and he moved on.

Good luck to him, it's just a signing that hasn't worked out, and I agree with those that have said since he had COVID he hasn't been the same

It’s a short loan isn’t it? In that case, he may not do that well at Huddersfield, come back here, and be offloaded to a L1 or L2 team.

Which he deserved when he was playing well. He then got ill and as his employer, the club had a duty of care to pay his wages whilst he was ill and recovering. Like they do with O'Hare, like they do with Godden, like they do with McFadzean etc etc

It’s interesting it’s not his fitness that has dropped it’s his composure and decision making and control and awareness

Matty James was 28/29? when he first joined us and was only short term. We elected to not blow the bank by matching whatever other offer he got. This makes giving a two year older Waghorn a high wage contract for 2 years even more strange.

Some transfers turn out to be bad signings but mostly you can see the logic in taking the risk; Bright - could have been immense had he got his head right, Allasani, Dexter Walters etc could have ended up being McCallum types.

Gyok, Hamer and O’Hare have been great signings - young and sellable - logical signings.

Waghorn? 31? Big contract? Crazy.

You're clinging onto this being ill stuff. Even if it is the case and reason for his decline he scored 1 goal from about 15 appearances before that. And again, excuse my negativity for someone whose cost us £500,000 per goal

How many consecutive games has he started since this time last year? His control and awareness look fine to me, he doesn’t look sharp around the box and he looks like a player that needs a run of 10 games somewhere. Lack of goals clearly affecting him also judging by his penalty celebration. If he can go to Huddersfield, start a few games, score off his backside early on, then I can see him getting a decent move to a top end L1 club in the summer. There’s still a player in there somewhere, but it’s not going to get unlocked playing a few minutes here and there for us.

I will say during the dreadful opening few months of this season his performances were decent by comparison to certain others. But that injury he picked up against Sheff U seems to have seen to that.

Yes, Sheff Utd, when he scored the penalty, kicked the hoarding in the throes of celebrating and crocked himself further.

The one thing that has always annoyed is he comes for the ball to feet then spins round and as the ball is played for the run he comes back for the ball to feet and it clouds my balance to everything else about him

The misses Bristol city and Wrexham when clean through sorry the tame shots at the keeper when clean through were symptomatic of lack of composure though equally could be lack of game time I grant you

Whilst I don't disagree with what you're saying, if the best he can hope for is a top end L1 club then he's obviously not good enough for us

Think you are correct there those two misses were poor and the Wrexham one expensive, not blaming just him for the defeat but that miss certainly contributed to a bad day at the office for us.

I'm not clinging...a few posters on here have mentioned it. He obviously hasn't been the same since Covid.

Before then, maybe he didn't smash them in regularly. But he was a great foil for Vik. If I had the time I'd look for those match threads. I suspect the feedback on them is positive and he'd have good ratings.

Heskey didn't score many but was important to Owen.

Great deal to shift the lavishly paid, zero value, over the hill, Derby reject...well done to whoever at the club, managed to set this deal up.
It was fairly clear that when he was in his final years at Derby, his legs/speed/movement were on a big decline.
Hopefully we have someone lined up to replace him soon (Patterson or A.N.Other?), or our injured duo (Walker and Godden) will be back soonish.
Financially speaking, this is a deal we really couldn't let slip.

Heskey still scored at 1 in 4 though. Just being a good foil isn't enough really, you still need goal contributions from your second striker.

Waghorn has 2 in 38. Even Biamou managed 5 in 33.

I think my point still stands. Before he got Covid, he was still a good partner that got some good stuff out of a raw Gyo.

Given our budgets and owner at the time, he was an OK signing and did OK. Certainly not deserving of some of the nonsense on this thread.

He’s one of our highest paid players and scored once from open play in two seasons. I’d hate to see what a bad signing looks like.
