Research has shown that the amount a club spends on players wages is the main determinant of where a team finishes in the league. So I thought it would be interesting to compare how much the clubs in this year's L1 have been spending on wages in the recent past.

There are some caveats in the figures below:
1. The very small clubs generally don't report staff costs because they file abbreviated accounts without a P&L account and detailed notes. So the list below primarily includes the "larger" L1 clubs.
2. Total staff costs include amounts paid to stewards etc. So the amounts below are not exactly the same as the amounts spent on players and management.
3. Obviously some of the L1 clubs were in a higher division when these accounts were published. It's likely their budgets will be lower this year having been relegated to L1.
4. There are a couple of clubs whose information is a bit out of date (Bolton and Peterboro).
5. Obviously these numbers pertain to last year and may not give an accurate guide to the budgets for this year.
6. Unfortunately I couldn't get a copy of Bradford's accounts so their staff costs are missing from the table below.

To me there are some interesting stats here. First, I am surprised that Millwall's spending was so high while MK Dons was so low. In fact Coventry spent more last year than did MK Dons.

Second, there has been a lot of talk about how much Sheff Utd have been spending. But it looks like Sheff Utd's spending may be a lot lower than the likes of Bolton, Millwall and Charlton.

Anyway, here are the numbers. Make of them what you will ....

Team Staff costs Year
Bolton 27.6m 2014
Millwall 15.2m 2015
Charlton 11.5m 2015
Sheff Utd 9.6m 2015
Peterboro 5.5m 2013
Coventry 5.2m 2015
MK Dons 5.0m 2015
Scunthorpe 4.4m 2015
Gillingham 3.2m 2015
Walsall 3.1m 2015
Southend 3.0m 2015
Shrewsbury 3.0m 2015
Wimbledon 2.2m 2015

Wigan won the league with a huge wage bill. But who was second and third, with two of lowest wage bills?

Southend, Gillingham and other lower payers were fighting for promotion all season, whilst Sheffield Utd and Peterborough were never really in the hunt.

Yes, you'll get the better players if you pay higher wages, but that doesn't always match, or equal a better manger/TEAM/and motivation. Not at this level at least.

CCFC directors paid 314K to themselves in 2015. You're right that in some clubs the directors don't take any salary but ours is one of the clubs where they do. I wouldn't object to paying them if they had done anything useful, but they haven't.

Thinking about it, I bet Burnley's wage bill was much lower than Hull's, Boro's, Sheff Wendy's etc.

And Northampton players weren't even paid at all, at times.

So, the theory is tat, based on last season then.

And there is one of the reasons they are here ! I think football wages are obscene anyway , but ...... in comparison we cant pay big money any-more , hence we have the scraps left behind .
