I took an Oldham supporting friend to the match yesterday (as I had a spare ST) his views were:

First half best player on the park: Fleck and was delighted he was subbed
McSheffrey: couldn't believe he was ever a £4.5m player as he can't tackle
Biggest disagreement: I thought Adams was superb he thought he was defensively suspect
Promotion prospects: he thinks we'll make the playoffs but not sure about promotion

Do these views resonate with anyone?

I think Adams is superb, Sheffers tackling ability is not that vital. Does he agree that the Ref gave them almost everything !

Not really.

Fleck was poor average at best, Jennings and Adams our way players first half
Sheff is nowhere near the player we sold to Birmingham, if he was still that same player he wouldn't be playing for us in league one. Some fans need to get over that fact.
Adams was one of our best players yesterday.

What about the most blatant penalty ever seen.. when their keeper gave McSheffrey a two handed shove in the back??

Too often when Sheff has a 60/40 ball he loses it when others expect him to win it; they push forward expectantly and then a large hole appears for the opposition to surge forward...

I do wonder if our judgement of Fleck is clouded by the expectation that surrounded his arrival. He got a good rating in the Football League Paper too.

Disagree. Don't think Fleck was as bad as some have said on here, but he was certainly hit and miss. Jennings was best player first half.

McSheffrey: couldn't believe he was ever a £4.5m player as he can't tackle

McSheffrey has never been able to tackle. Can Michael Owen tackle? Berbatov? McShuff isn't in the team to tackle.

Biggest disagreement: I thought Adams was superb he thought he was defensively suspect
Promotion prospects: he thinks we'll make the playoffs but not sure about promotion

Thought Adams was excellent. Hardly saw a player of theirs get past him all afternoon.

Ref was a bit of a joke. He booked their centre forward, who then went on to commit at least another 4 fouls on Edge. Some of his decision making was quite awful.

On this one I think I'd trust the Oldham view rather than someone who has a vendetta...

Only because he's agreeing with your pro-fleck/anti-sheff vendetta.

Who did you think was the best player in the first half?

Hold on, so your friends criteria for a player to be worth £4.5million+ is that he can tackle?! I'm not sure Brum got him for his tackling ability!

I disagree with this slightly, firstly, I'm going to point out that you're comparing him to strikers, not LMs, I agree Sheff doesn't have to be winning every 50/50 an put in crunching tackles all game, but a LM (and RB) has to be better at defending, than say, a CAM or ST, because the players upfront need to press more than tackle so the defence is harried into giving the ball away etc. but a LM needs to be able to help out his LB defensively, and Sheff is tragic at defending, I remember when he said himself he was the "worst defender in the league".

Wingers need to be able to help out their full back, that isn't Sheff's strongest point...

No they weren't bothered about his tackling, they were more interested his goals and assists. Scored 17 goals and provided 19 assists in their promotion season.

Amazing that you established his criteria from my reporting his quote...

The point he made was...there has been some considerable decline in his playing standard in a relatively short time.

Fleck isn't a 90min man. He needs to work on his fitness levels.

For me Moussa needs to be back in the side. His pace and link up with the front is vital.

Interesting that Robins said because of the bad weather the team hasn't been able to train properly and he has been unable to work on certain things with individuals.

I thought Jennings had his best 45 minutes since joining.

The move where Fleck nearly found the top corner was started by one of the best passes I've seen all season from Jennings, split through the defence out to the right wing for Christie. Agree he was our best player in the first half.

Hold on, I may have been being slightly sarcastic, but you did say your mate said, and I quote... "Mcsheffrey: couldn't believe he was a £4.5mil player as he can't tackle"! Got to admit, that sounds like his main criteria for a player is tackling ability!

Not at all, I thought Sheff played ok, I have since praised him on the assists front.

The people I sat with were in agreement he was playing well, including an anti-Flecker. Thing is, I can admit when Sheff plays well, you can't admit Fleck plays well when he plays well, that's the difference.

As soon as he plays well, I will hold my hand up and said he played well.

He was average yesterday, I gave him a 5 only 1 mark less than you did. 1 decent shot and a couple of good passes. And everyone around me were saying he needed to go off at half time.

The best he's played was vs Shrewsbury first half playing deep, when he had little pressure put on him so he can pick a pass, but he is too defensively weak to play that deep.

I had a couple of Irish fellas sat behind me at the game who obviously hadn't been for a while since they referred to Coventry players by their numbers.

Just before half-time they said 10 (Fleck) was a quality player, rarely wastes a pass. Also said the big lad up front, 15, was working hard & making the runs but the service to him was poor.

Also a personal view on McSheffrey, the role he plays in our system absolutely requires him to tackle. To say otherwise displays poor tactical knowledge. One of two things happen when McSheffrey attempts a tackle, either a free-kick to them or he falls over and they carry on unaffected. His job when we don't have the ball is to protect Adams from the opposition fullback joining the attack. He has never added this to his game after several managers have said he needs to. He failed to track two or three runs yesterday.

With respect, Couldn't care less what he thinks

The 18 goals he scored from midfield in Birmingham City's promotion winning season probably paid for itself.
Not sure it was actually 4.5 million
Paul Scholes can't tackle.
A lot of people from Coventry don't like him, Blues fans do. Make your own mind up.

*cue the Mcsheffrey haters*

Would never want to be seen as knocking McSheffrey, and ideally would like to see him in the team week in week out; but this post is spot on.

Really don't think Clarke was all that impressive actually, though I seem to be in the minority here. Both full backs were good going forward, Bailey had a strong game and Jennings seemed in better shape.

Clarke was our worse player yesterday

Agreed about the full backs was well pleased with how much they tried to overlap and tried to run past there wide player

Can't remember the last time I saw both City full backs pressing their opposite numbers so often.

Anytime the opposition is attacking, and Sheff has to attempt a tackle, there is a groan from City supporters. 9 times out of 10 he makes a hash of it, and puts us under extreme pressure. Have to agree with some earlier posts, Fleck is a good distributor of the ball when given time and room, but isn't in the game for long enough periods, and Sheff is a liability at times

To be fair McSheffrey does get bigged up because he is from cov! Our most dangerous player is usually the phrase used! Yes in some games he does run at players and tranmere first half he really did but no end product! He seems a bit too greedy sometimes.

his crossing and passing is amazing one minute then stupidly overhit the next.

The best we've played that I've seen is the Walsall match, and for that match sheff was in the middle with moussa out left. Sheffs runs in that match were quality and moussa got back and forward brilliantly.

I gave him a bonus point for the assist, also a had a decent free kick, I also think you're underplaying his excellent link up play with Adams -Adams had a great game and looks much better with sheff in front of him. They seem to have developed a decent partnership.
