Torp is looking better every week and seems to have better fitness levels and getting his foot in now (his passing and moving the ball quickly was never an issue just a strength). I stand by my early season criticism of him, but looking a different player now.

Re Torps first goal a shout out for Ellis Simms who dragged and occupied two central defenders towards the front post to allow Torp to come in behind . I doubt that will show up on any stats but it was in many ways and assist.

First goal to me looked like a push on Simms! Turned out ok though

Tbf 433/4231 didn't produce many good halves of football, you can probably couldn't on one hand and still have fingers to spare.

That said these last 3 wins have been against a teams with injuries and who are in poor form.

I think Man Utd and Wolves were pretty good.

For context we are a team with injuries to key players

Yeah, Watford away first half too. Like I say given we played it for 25+ games with that formation there's not been many, even when we had Wright, EMC and Sheaf all fit.

No arguments from me we’ve been poor most of this season.

That was the issue for me, he was a sub in both those games. He always looked good coming off the bench when the game was getting stretched and there were a few tired legs.

What he couldn't do was impose himself on a game from the start. He wasn't quick enough physically or mentally.

That has changed. I don't necessarily put it down to Lampard, I think a lot has to do that his fitness is now right for this level of football and he has learnt what the English game is about. That process takes time, players need time to adapt and settle in.

We are now getting the Torp I was expecting at the start of the season.

Yes but in a 433 the central one of the 3 will be in front of the 2 centre backs protecting them.
Don't forget Sheaf has played at centre back in an emergency and he did well.
First line of defence and first line of attack I think it’s what he does best, others disagree.
The whole point of a fans forum.

Think part of it is he’s also now learned / learning what you can get away with physically in the championship before refs start blowing the whistle / dishing out cards. I don’t know for certain but potentially the league he was in before was a bit less blood & thunder and refs less lenient?

Exactly this. It's what Hamer did. If he can do that consistently, he'll sort a lot of our issues in midfield out.

Oxford we looked good both halves going forward. We've been more adventurous with it under Lampard in getting midfielders into the box.

The forwards are the first line of defence really, especially as you are otherwise likely to get overloaded

Wouldn't surprise me if he got called up to spend time with the squad. Doesn't necessarily mean he would get game time. Great performance and the free kick was sublime. Scoring goals will help get him noticed.

Torp's not showing abilities he didn't show before, but his contribution has stepped up with a clear improvement in fitness. I seem to recall he missed most of the pre-season with an injury, and it takes a while to catch up from that. As has happened with other players, some people on here were making blinkered judgements.

He's a subtle defender isn't he, nip in to win the ball rather than blasting into 50:50. Showed great timing and technique to win the ball back from the Watford 8 (who's superb at driving with it from midfield)

Agreed, he came to us half way through last season and needed time to settle into a new team, new league and new country.

And as you said, missed much of pre-season.
We are currently seeing what he's really capable of now he's fully fit.

Like Allen, I think this formation suits his style which also helps.

Over the season Sheaf has a 58.1% success rate and Torp 65.8%. Both have won 25 tackles and Sheaf has played more minutes so it looks correct (source FotMob)

You’re right. I wonder why whoscored has different stats. Do they not all come from the same place?

Yeah it's not a new thing, I'm not sure why people have refused to see it. It might be that he takes the ball off people rather than sliding 25 yards.

The tackling is a bonus - ok an important one - but I love him for his passing skills and his ability to make space.
Seems like he’s now consistently showing us just how good he is. Which we only saw hints of last year.

That is now showing through with his increased fitness. His tracking back was much better v Watford. He still isn't super quick but he can now at least more or less stay with them which keeps them under pressure.

Earlier in the season he was just lagging behind if a player went past him. The same if we broke forward quickly.

He has always shown he has a good football brain and skills to match. It was just a case of getting up to this level of fitness and speed of thought.
