Think we stuck we a 5-2-1-2 since the first championship year until O’Hare got injured and then we went between 5-2-2-1 and the 5-2-1-2. Since then though it’s been a bit all over the place with 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1

If I recall
League two - 4-2-3-1 - 4-2-4 once Jones injured
League one - did he go back to 4-2-3-1?
League one winning -went to 5-2-2-1
Championship - morphed into 5-2-1-2
Now - as you’ve said 4-3-3/4-2-3-1

Positively shows he is willing to change, but does seem to need a tinker to get going. Hoping we can either get going in a 4-3-3 or we change shape a bit earlier than last year.

I’m assuming you’ve never heard of something called periodisation?

Literally coach in every sport will try to utilise this. In short, it gears the athletes to be physically and mentally at their best at the most important parts of the season.

So no, it isn’t setting them up to ‘play better’ deliberately at later points of the season, it’s about getting the players to be at their best when it most matters. For arguments sake, if the team is at 90%, we’ll be steadily working to get them up to 98-99% by Xmas and again by Easter. It’s not possible to be at that level all season in any sport.

Football in general teams and players get better and fitter as the season goes on for most teams anyway

Periodisation training in football is a training schedule typically used over a 7-10 day period between matches because football is too result based

Jesus, I've heard it all now. We're purposely having bad starts so that we can have better finishes? It's as simple as this... we try and win every league game but sometimes we just don't.

The fact that people are even talking about robins having pressure this season is bizarre to me. We're in a group of about 15 teams that have a chance of going up.. 3 will. If we don't this year then I'd still want Robins to be the one to have another crack next year.

And for the original thread, I think Torp is a good player and will have a decent season.

I mean it’s a football club, but it’s also a goalkeeping holiday resort. Food and board provided in exchange for laying out some cones a few times a week.

No and I think that the man that is funding the club is well aware he’s got one of the best managers that would be available to CCFC and is the reason that we are now a club with 22,000 season ticket holders which *is* helping to fund the club.

We as fans should be very wary of putting pressure of “no promotion this season = change manager”. Promotion is still a bit of a lottery but Robins would buy us more tickets than most.

People are buying tickets as they want success. That is improvement not stagnation or decline.

King is bridging a £7 million black hole. Its very naive to think he will just sit, shrug his shoulders and think its a lottery or why be so active in spending money on players at all.

It’s not “no promotion - change manager” it’s expectation of competing, of course if Robins gets to the play offs and loses, it’s a good season. The moment we start sliding back to midtable is when King will be asking questions.

we’re one of the highest spenders in the league - there’s an expectation we will be comfortably in the top 6.

The time to begin assessing that will be at the 10-15 game mark.

How do ensure squad members not in the starting 11 are at their best if they’ve not played a lot of minutes or not at all? It isn’t as simple as just having a squad.

Yep. It applies to both the macro and microcycles. You will be looking at the optimal times to peak your performance throughout the season.

Agreed. What would be a sackable offence for Robins?

In my view, if we don’t make playoffs this season (finishing Top 9 or 10) there will be a lot of pressure going into 2025/26 where a slow start would probably result in the sack. Other than that, only a disaster this season such as a relegation scrap would result in the sack imo.

Revisit that seasons fixture and results list. The first games was a decent start tracking at 2 PPG, but from then on, until the the midway point, we dropped off a lot.

1-23 - 40 points, 1.74 PPG
24-34 - 27 points, 2.45 PPG

Specifically, our form picked up from the game before Xmas. In the next 10 games after October, we won 2 games leading up to the game before Xmas. Not only did the results pick up, the difficulty of opponents got harder and won us the league because we gained points and took points off the likes of Sunderland, Wycombe, Pompey, Ipswich

On the balance of things and you look past the first 10 games, I think it’s reasonable to say we got off to a slow start.

You’re really obtuse when you want to be so let’s revisit some of the things you had to say about how great our season was going in Dec 2019:

I didn’t have to go back further, before Xmas our form over the prior 10 games had us 19th, hence my comments about a slow start.

Goodnight Fernando.

One thing I’ve noticed about Torp is that he generally doesn’t play well against teams that pressure and Harry him. His best games came against teams that gave him space.

he was great in his cameo against United and played alright last night. Conversely struggled against Stoke and if I recall Birmingham last year

We struggle as a whole against team who press us hard and play a physical game. One of the big things we need to work on this season.

One of the promising things about Dovin, he seems to know when to bypass the press and pass it to a player nearer the halfway line.

Drogba was at Chelsea for 18 months before he finally settled down and became the fantastic player that everybody remembers. Could well be that Torp is struggling with being in a new country and the expectation on his shoulders maybe weighing on his mind for the moment.
