I think I have said elsewhere that this biting the hand that feeds you (to use the vernacular and despite relatively small numbers involved - but that number can certainly cause some disproportionate death and injury. Can you imagine the headlines and pixelated pictures and videos of victims?

It isn’t all that surprising that there are then the right wing reactions that are so condemned on here, for example. And these security operations can’t be kept secret to avoid winding people up.

Why is it that anyone who speaks out about this situation Is immediately branded as right wing?
There's plenty on people from all walks of society who have genuine concerns.

Perhaps tell my Iranian best man why he should be booted out of the country because of his nationality then.

Because it's a lazy way to categorise dissenters from the majority on here. Knee jerk, brainwashed, zero thought required, divisive.

There will be plenty of people who would be more than happy to do so, and drive him to the coast.

If you've got a problem with the Iranian state, that's one thing.

If you think blaming all Iranians for the actions of a tiny number is acceptable, then you're a racist idiot. Which is it?

Now I'm not saying you are a racist idiot, but let's be fair, the right wing does have more than its fair share of them, so it wouldn't necessarily come as a surprise if someone banging on about lefties turned out to be one.

This really is a poor attempt in a 6th form debating society

Most people are by definition Liberal Democrat’s. If you are genuinely socialist or far right you are protectionist and racist

You literally posted to tell people to "f*ck off" out of the country as the first reply in a thread about VE Day. Next post was branding the country as it stands a waste of our war dead.

Happy VE Day all. They say an increasing interest in the Second World War is a sign of male ageing and i certainly seem to be getting older of late. The more i read about it the greater my admiration and gratitude to a generation that took a stand against facism and protected the freedoms we have today. The World may not be perfect but its a damn sight better than one left to be dominated by the Third Reich or Imperial Japan.

Conway's line there is a monstrous overreaction. He's probably never read about concentration camps, Mengele, the Rape of Nanking (the list goes on to be honest). If he had, i fail to see how any of the issues we face today could remotely justify 'not bothering' to fight that war. Unfathomable.

My granddad fought through Italy in the cavalry and never wanted to really talk about any of it, as ive learned more i think ive started to understand why. I can never remotely put myself in the position of a 20-something conscript fighting in an existential war but i can only conclude it must have been fucking terrifying.

Hopefully every adult has at least heard of the Holocaust and knows what it was to the extent you wouldn’t wish we had allowed it to be completed.

With the nonsense in the other thread, this is worth a read - Britons largely unaware of Black and Asian contribution to WW2 effort, research shows

can’t really disagree but who is going to do that and how? Trump and the US seem to be developing a lot to be answered for.

So much seems helpless at the moment. If Israel was justified in the actions against Gaza etc then so is India in theirs against Palestine. personally really don’t think they are, any of them.

Literally millions of troops and god knows how much war materiel, barely gets a mention most of the time. France had quite a compex relationship with all this, loads of colonial troops fought throughout yet weren't allowed to parade through Paris once it had been liberated. Must have been such a burn for the aryan supersoldiers being beaten by these units as well.

I fear the passing of time allows for things to be downplayed somewhat, hopefully not to the extent that more than a stupid minority actually buy into the bullshit though.

Indeed, though it is also a day to realise we must not be complacent. We have the major world powers being run by Trump, Xi and Putin. Then there are the likes of Meloni, Orban, Netanyahu and Modi as well as others in South America and likely Africa, plus the likes of Le Pen and Farage gaining popularity.

The world is hardly awash with freedom.

This is a thread which, like many, meanders backwards and forwards across many topics. Particularly when people, even other than me, make some comment that is just a little off direct topic and get another back that is a little off their off topic comment. Before anyone knows it, the thread is practically random. Made worse by it appearing that some people read nothing more than the immediately preceding post.

The original tweet was wrong, the cenotaph doesn’t look like it would have done 80 years ago. Had little red plastic fences even been invented then?

Bear in mind the post this was a response to @Sky Blue Dreamer who had ended a post with the words

The world is hardly awash with freedom.

Didnt my post give an actual example confirming that?

We were not awash with freedom in relation to the TG agenda and have needed the Supreme Court to give us some legal guidance in opposition to Starmer’s view ( not sure of his science or medical qualifications to have made any pronouncements tbh).

Brighton Sky Blue said:
I don’t think we as the West really had a choice in the circumstances. Churchill did of course float ‘Operation Unthinkable’ in the immediate aftermath of the war to invade Soviet-occupied Poland.

Regardless that’s nothing to do with Malc’s post.
you're totally wrong there in terms of relevance to my post.

Further, hadn’t Churchill proposed invading and fighting up Germany’s Eastern front to minimise the possibility of Stalin’s Russia doing what they did in retaining territory?

Americans knew better it appeared. Not entirely sure they were proved right. Perhaps they were just reflecting the appetite for further fighting at the time, rather than what might have been the most long term beneficial approach.
