Yup, far from great is it. Doesn't make what Russia are doing any less horrific though does it.

There does seem to be a problem out in those parts (Poland too) with ultra far right Nazi types.

Sadly all countries have this growing ultra/Alt right wing groups/individuals. It's terrorism and needs to be dealt with strongly by police. Most of these are guys and gals with serious mental health issues so it's hard to deal with. Same applies to any ultra left wing groups although these groups are much fewer between.

I did this. Used a vpn over in Japan to get onto the Facebook in USSR. I looked for prominent people by the name of Sergey. he happens to be a rock star with a smallish following on Facebook. I could have chosen better but managed to engage Russians directly. The comments are rolling and more pics are being put on by people…

Dan Milmo
In the week since the Kremlin blocked Facebook, hundreds of thousands of Russians have sought to circumvent the ban using a virtual private network, the Guardian’s global technology editor Dan Milmo reports.
A VPN creates an encrypted connection between your device and a remote server, which can be anywhere in the world, so in theory you can access sites blocked in your country.
Nikolay*, a Russian who now lives in the EU, says his friends back home bought a VPN in order to communicate with him and others amid fears that access to the outside world could become limited. “There is a lot of talk that people should get these VPNs as soon as possible,” says Nikolay.
Over the past week VPNs have been in strong demand in Russia. Internet searches for VPN services in the country almost doubled between 4 March and 10 March compared with the previous week, according to Top10VPN, a UK company that reviews and recommends private network services. There were at least 260,000 searches on 5 March alone, the day after Facebook was banned.
“By replacing their Russian IP address with that of the remote server, which will typically be in another country, using a VPN means Russians can access internet services that are blocking Russian traffic,” says Simon Migliano, head of research at Top10VPN.

I reckon within the week they’ll take Kyiv, unfortunately.

Back in the day. And no, I'm certainly not a Russian sympathiser. This war is abhorrent and needs to end. Just picked out some of the lead up to this war. Having read a bit about the rise of Nazism the shadows cast by torch parades in 1930's Germany came to mind.

Just what Putin needed as an excuse to go into Ukraine. (certainly not the only one) Russian hate of anything that resembled an old foe.

As I said last time you brought this up, if the presence of far right nationalists is justification for a military invasion there’s not a country on the planet that’s safe.

Again it's the numbers. 10000 out if population of 40+ million. Did nothing at the ballot box.

Neo Nazi pro-Russian militias also been in Donbas and Crimea with Russian support since 2014. Recruiting from across Europe.

Russia has these idiots, USA has these idiots, lots of Europe has these groups.
Nationalist ideologies found in many parties across Europe.

It is definitely not justification. They just need to be addressed as a separate problem when this is over. Like I said before

I’m not disagreeing with you. It just needs to be stopped.

As they do in every country on the planet. Including Russia. It’s irrelevant in a thread about the war.

Biden on twitter tonight again saying that there's no chance of NATO going into Ukraine. This is odd after at least vague threats from various parties of 'serious consequences' if Russia uses chemical weapons.

Tactically, I can't help feel it's a mistake. We shouldn't be telling Putin what we won't do, we should at least be sowing the seed of doubt - it might be the only thing holding Putin back from using even more hideous tactics.
Biden possibly playing to domestic elements rather than Russia with these statements??
Ideally he'd be making statements about options being kept open if certain lines are crossed - doesn't need to be confrontational. His statements atm do almost green light Putin to use whatever tactics or weapons he likes within Ukraine.
God forbid something goes wrong at Chernobyl again ( which is a serious concern in this part of Europe) the fall out would again effect NATO members like last time.

As above I think they'll have to flatten it to take it.

Nothing much suggests that they are able to take it at the moment otherwise

I have no love for Trump, he was definitely an egotistical narcissist madman.

I do agree with MMB that him being that way could have made Putin pause. Trump was happy to just assassinate that Iranian general he didn't like and would have been unhinged enough to go to war for his reputation.

Biden basically saying crack on we won't stop you has definitely done nothing to stop him.

For all of the criticism of Biden, some of which is justified imho, there's no way this would be better under Trump.

Putin wanted Trump in power, that's well documented, with Russia trying to directly influence both presidential elections.

It's no coincidence that there's a substantial overlap between Trump's far right support in the US and the Putin apologists. A much overused word, but basically, fascism.

Errr. All of them. Your posts on this thread alone is exhibit A.

You’ve used the whole thread as an excuse to pore scorn on our European neighbours. You’ve been more critical of them on this thread than you have Putin. Which is quite remarkable given the thread is about Putin invading Ukraine.

That of course is what Mr Lammy thinks

Labour MP David Lammy says his comparison of Tory Brexiteers to Nazis ‘wasn’t strong enough’

no it’s not a surprise and rather than juvenile insults like appeasement and Neville chamberlain (who wasn’t an appeaser and generally is acknowledged as helping the war effort) which seems to be very prevalent on here the US administration needs to get its head out of its arse and negotiate with Putin and his Kremlin sidekick a way out before this escalates - and it will.

Putin will never back down and the Wests comments are borderline absurd. Cheerleading ukraines for bravery. One clown the other day said something like “even if every Ukrainian dies Russia wikk have lost this war” - ok
