The closer you get to the border, the more real it gets. I have seen so many cars with Ukraine number plates now (most of the cars pretty fancy actually). The cars are generally just full of women and kids, but I have seen the odd young male driving them too. Cars packed full of belongings of people probably moving their lives with no idea of when they will return home, if ever.

I am starting to get more and more annoyed that the rest of the world is basically just standing by and letting this happen, even though I know the consequences of getting involved could be terrible. This just isn´t on at all. I still feel the biggest hope is someone taking out Putin, but I am almost at the point where I would back unanimous military engagement from the rest of the world. It is a massive risk, however maybe the only way to put an end to it. Like fucking Sophie´s choice right now, but sitting and doing nothing just feels plain wrong.

There wouldn’t be a world agreement would there? And therefore no agreement to act. I think we are screwed when quite rightly we have been party to inhuman acts or those we support or arm in Iraq Yemen Syria Palestine etc etc.

And that’s not listing any countries in Africa.

That said I agree it’s bloody bizarre that we are standing back because putin has threatened to start a nuclear war. Do we genuinely believe he will?

I´m in the Czech Republic at the moment, working remotely and having a little holiday (or trying to). It is still a 6/7 hour drive to the border for me, but it is keeping me awake at night. Not sure if I should get involved or how to go about it. Keep changing my mind from one moment to the next.

Same here.
People are posting on all sorts of social media trying to find places for these people to stay as hardly any Govt help in that area.
Sad truth is we don't have the infrastructure to cope here.
So far numerically it's the equivalent of about 1.4m people turning up in the UK over a period of a week or so. And predictions are that the number here could quadruple over coming weeks.
It's not like other EU countries are actively saying we'll take x number now to alleviate this situation.

All valid points, and I hope that when the dust settles here we'll start to look again at how we use our influence in the rest of the world so that no one else has to live through this.

Like you though, I'm at the point where I think it's time to push back a bit and see what appetite Putin really has for conflict with NATO.

What if NATO said, we're going to establish humanitarian corridors to resupply cities with food, water and medical supplies, and to allow civilians to escape (this to prevent their indiscriminate slaughter).

If we said we'd defend these routes with a limited military response directly against any attackers if they were threatened, would Putin really want to take us on over it?

We aren’t just standing back because of the threat of nuclear war though that’s obviously a major factor

Even without that the major countries in the Middle East would openly side with Russia and that’s nothing to do with arming Syria and Libya.

Pakistan clearly and openly support Putin

many African nations have links with him

China will fence sit but if there was an attempt to enter Russia that will change quickly

Fans don't care. Chelsea fans have been defending Abramovich since this started, Newcastle fans were the same with their takeover. As long as someone is coming in and promising to spend money they have no issue.

And the mask slips, we are making it difficult because we don't want Ukrainians to come in our country. Patel has been on the phone to thr Irish counterpart complaining that their welcoming of Ukrainian refugees will give them an opportunity to get in the UK through the 'back door'.

Completely agree, which says an awful lot about the moral abyss football has fallen into.

If only the game had some kind of governing body who could make a stand on it, some sort of test for fit and proper ownership...

Who knows, CD, maybe this will start the changes required, but I won't hold my breath.

The Russian foreign minister says he is not interested in justifying what they do in Ukraine .
We don't need to justify arming the Ukrainians to the teeth and flying in humanitarian aid then.

I'm not sure he was even talking about nukes, his threat was something like "consequences the world has never seen before". We've already seen nukes dropped over Japan, and the devastating impact even a small nuke can cause. Something like an EMP could send us back to the stone age for years to come. Maybe they've developed a new weapon, that makes the tsar bomba have the same impact as a child throwing a rock. Maybe he's just talking shite to continue to portray his macho image.

Something doesn't feel right about the whole thing though. The Russians look incompetent so far but is it just a ploy to bring in the west before they unleash the full force.

The Independent and Gina Miller aren´t really two sources I would take too seriously to be honest. They love to wind people up about stuff like this.

I do think we should be doing more to make it easier for refugees coming from Ukraine, without question. If they want to come here then we should have something better set up. It is the least we can do given the situation.

With the club not being able to sell tickets as suggested, it means that it’s away fans that are not allowed to attend, because the home income and attendance from season tickets is already secured. It’s just really backward thinking.

My hunch, based on absolutely no evidence, is that we have credible information indicating he's mentally deteriorating and therefore unpredictable. We seem otherwise to be surprisingly cautious about anything bordering on a military intervention; i really think the decision makers see Putin's threats of escalation to be credible.

To be fair the government lawyers have probably been working on this for a while. The government rightly stayed non committal in public

I was getting frustrated with the delays but can kind of see why it’s been taking a while now, legal case has got to be water tight. Although I don’t think it will, this could fuck up a club worth 2bn+

I think we all know how much of a c**t Patel is, so in this case there may be an argument. I think in general however, whenever there is any possible chance to get over dramatic and sensationalist, The Independent are best at it. They post a lot of inaccuracies and love to wind people up with things that are often exaggerated, or untrue. The bias as I said is as bad as The Daily Mail on the other side.

Without doing a Tony and trying to get this down the avenue of Brexit, I remember when the vote happened, my ex at the time (who was European) was totally fine about it all until she read an article on that website about how they were sorry she was no longer welcome here. It was horrible and really upset her.

There is a reason they can´t afford to print it anymore.
