I think your brother just finally disproved the cliche that Brits do sarcasm better than Americans.

??? You know nothing about my brother ???Are you saying you don't believe me/him - I think my brother knows sarcasm, and I wasn't saying they're all like that, just that in his observation, the world outside the USA is irrelevant. He worked in China for years too, and had some interesting observations on them and their mindset re: 'the Chinese know best and any other way is wrong'.

Best takes from my last visit:

- How are things in your country of London
- You speak really good English for an Australian (aimed at a mate)
- How well do you know the queen
- Do you really have CCTV everywhere

That being said, most Americans I have met have actually been really lovely people. Just a lot of them have no clue about things outside of their bubble.

Did wonder if they might try to take advantage of the current chaos.

Amazing the reaction to a countries behaviour when it's not us or our allies .. who for example , invaded Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan , Yemen, Guatemala, Panama, Rwanda, Vietnam etc .

Weird how we are programmed to behave differently when certain other people do things

It is a defence though. It is nowhere near as bad as some people are making out and it is certainly better than nothing.

If Corbyn was in we would have that, nothing. People don't like it being pointed out.

It's not a defence. It's a deterrent. You need to learn the difference.

Our nuclear capability makes people think twice about nuking us. It deters them. But once that bomb is on the way Trident offers NO defence at all. It won't stop that bomb reaching us, it won't limit the destruction it causes.

It's like leaving someone on the halfway line when the opposition has a corner. That person isn't defending the corner, but they're deterring the opposition from sending more people to attack.

Ukraine surrendered their nuclear powers in 1994 to UK, USA and Russia in exchange for protection ..

It's a propaganda thing though isn't it (even if we like to call it spin here).

We invaded Iraq because our government spun the lie that we're 45 minutes from being attacked. A majority, despite what opinion polls say now, supported the war. If you were a Russian then you'd think the UK population had been obviously lied to by their government so they can go and get a slice of Iraq's oil.

Now with the shoe on the other foot Russians believe that the Ukrainian army is attacking them due to what their government and media is telling them and from the outside we can see it's just Putin's territorial expansion plans.

For us to have more clout in the world we need to stop rushing into situations that have nothing to do with us. Steaming into Libya and fucking the place up for example.

Now we go to the UN and say "Russia have to stop" a load of other members are going to say "They're just doing what you've done in the past"

The Corbyn argument is a strange one. A totally hypothetical argument based on something that didn't happen two years ago.

Meanwhile the bloke who won the vote is totally in bed with the Russians and is too scared to do anything because he doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him. What a wonderful situation we're in.

Well, the entire thing does show ukraine were absolutely justified in wanting NATO membership. You have to wonder if Putin would have done this if they were, knowing the NATO alliance would wade in?

Some would have you believe this was all NATO’s fault in the first place. They’re a bit quieter today.

And there is the actual reality.

There's absolutely no way Putin does this if Ukraine is part of NATO.

An unintended consequence of this madness will be absolutely what Putin hates, NATO membership increasing elsewhere.

Without air cover they can't just stand and fight - they'd lose quickly
