World beating stuff from the government again.

The UK Home Office's free helpline is not usable for anyone outside of the UK, apparently 0800 numbers don't work abroad. Genius.

From the home office statement it appears that they thought this was operational. Quite happy for government to take flak for strategy and decisions (for example I wouldn’t just ignored lawyers and froze/seized oligarchs assets and dealt with consequences after) but delivery of this is with civil servants and as with numerous instances at start of pandemic they’ve been found wanting. It’s pathetic in times of crisis

Actually you seem a bit slow on the 5 things you didn’t know about Putin for your internship at the Cov Tel

Let me help start you off

1. Putins grandfather was a personal chef to Vladimir Lenin (he won’t want that out there he doesn’t seem to like Lenin very much)

To make a sweeping generalisation, there is a propensity in Russian politics to look to 'strongmen' politicians. If anything though, the way Putin utilises the Orthodox Church, he's modelling his leadership on a modern day Tsar.

For sure, I'm not disputing the extremism in that region.

My unpopular opinion is that had Trump been elected in 2020, this war wouldn't be happening now. The chaotic withdrawal in Afghanistan, slow arming of Ukraine and Biden's admission that Russia could get away with a 'small scale military operation' gave Putin the green lights he needed. The same could be said about Germany's Chancellor too.

In the 2020 race alone it was pretty obvious his team was hiding him from as many engagements as possible. The idea of Biden was more appealing than the reality.

Though really it’s not like the alternative wouldn’t have been even worse in this situation

It’s frightening really. Even Merkel, who I’ve always thought was by far the best leader around, is having her legacy shredded by this mess.

The fact is though, however shit our leaders, thank fuck we live in a (relatively) free country. The Russians are there with their psycho dictator who’s been in power for 20 years imprisoning and killing political rivals, not giving a fuck about economic sanctions that will make the poorest even poorer, turning their country into a pariah state, taking the internet offline and pumping crap out across the airwaves 24/7. All this whilst squirrelling away hundreds of billions of the countries money for him and his cronies

The more and more I read about it the more I am convinced that Russia are absolutely fucked and Putin has made a huge mistake.

The army is seemingly on the verge of collapse, with untrained troops, poorly maintained and/or old equipment, lack of food and fuel.

The economy is on the verge of collapse.

I wonder if Putin started to genuinely believe his propaganda machine and thought Ukraine would either welcome his army with open arms or would be so weak they'd be destroyed very quickly.

Either way, it was a huge mistake and I don't see any way that Russia can win this war and they will suffer the consequences for a long time.

I'm not so sure mate, it seems Putin would have to have made a lot of bad calls for that narrative to play out and Im not convinced he hasnt got plans b, c and dup his sleeve.

I hope I'm wrong. There is an absolute deluge of contradictory information its hard to know what to believe.

The military guy on bbc news has just said pretty much the opposite and that Ukraine is being taken apart and the only good news is a brief cease fire today to allow evacuation of civilians from areas that are totally under Russian control

I genuinely love the fact that you think we should do more militarily BSB. In my heart I’m 100% with you. But I can also see the other side of the argument. The potential risks involved, however small.

The mistake Nato made was not trying to at least draw some lines in the sand (other than don’t invade a NATO member) or at least leave our involvement ambiguous. Biden suggesting they would almost accept a small incursion, us/NATO saying we can’t get involved militarily, some European allies not helping to arm Ukraine before this kicked off etc. If we’d said we won’t get involved militarily but if there’s war crimes/attacks on civilian areas nothing is off the table. May not have made much of a difference but may have at least left Putin with something to think about

Yeah there certainly is a lot of contradictory information that's for sure. That's just my opinion from all that I've read, I could be ery wrong of course!

I do think they are in a desperate situation though, and the plans B, C and D that you mention are probably just to escalate the leveling of the cities. I think they've realised they are struggling on the ground war hence the increased indiscriminate shelling. That's not usually a tactic of someone who thinks they can take a city and plan to occupy it afterwards.

He has a long history of sinking his own campaigns through his own blunders. The famous example being to copy a Neil Kinnock speech but the 2020 campaigns saw him being quite deliberately kept out of the way whereas most other campaigns would keep their candidate as visible as possible.

Looking at how Biden took apart Paul Ryan in 2012 for example he comes over as more quick witted and sharper on the uptake. Perception is reality and Putin probably perceives him as a harmless bumbling old man

I think allowing Ukraine to be bombed, burned and laid under siege is a moment in history we will come to regret more than refusing to do anything so as to appease this man.

We told the Czechs to accept it for the greater good in the belief it would stop there. It didn’t because our opponent didn’t care for international treaties and was emboldened by his success. No Putin will not go for world domination, but he clearly does want to resurrect the state he grew up in.
