I personally think the performative banning of anything Russian is silly and will ultimately be counter productive. EA Sports taking Russian teams out of their games, I mean what is the point of this? The even more ridiculous one is the Compare the Meerkat thing.

The country has lost its fucking mind, completely irrational. The internet has made internet clout the sole objective of everything.

I think it's like you say, the clout. There will be people and news articles like "EA Sports refuse to take Russian teams out of their game" published to try and make them look bad after Geoff from Shrewsbury asked on Twitter and didn't get a response.

It's the same as the "I stand with" and "solidarity to" type stuff, a lot of it is just an empty gesture on whatever is going on at the time.

Don't disagree with either of those (for clarity, your view of it rather than the acts!). Who buys FIFA for Russian teams anyway?!?

That'll put paid to Michael from Alan Partridge's income stream for a while, rather than any Russians!

Yeah I saw Tesco isn't selling Russian Standard vodka.

They've already bought the stuff we may as well get through it and just not buy more if it's Russian or just carry on if it isn't

Surely Putin is stranded now in Russia he’ll never be able to travel abroad because of the airspace issue, so the rest of his life in Moscow.
Am I right in thinking this?
Until he gets taken out by one of his own because they’ll soon turn against him at home surely?
Will it end like a bit like the Hitler attempt on his life, that is my theory.

@Otis may know, in Russia is there less individualism and the mindset is more focused upon the collective?

As Putin now has over 80% of his forces in Ukraine, wouldn't now be a good time for a few terrorist attacks on Russia soil?

Not advocating it of course , but maybe a few Chechen resistance groups could pop over for a day trip.

Russia is leaving its back passage wide open for China to play take some of the land they want. They definitely need a few internal uprisings and if it happens to be Chechnya going for a drive out then so be it.

I keep telling myself that no one person in charge of Russia actually has the final decision in pushing the nuclear launch button.

I think that's nature. To want to survive.

My main thing would be my family and what is best for them. Am I of more use to them if I escape with them?

I know there will be certain elements on here who will call this next statement unpatriotic, but my last concern would be fighting for the country. It's far from perfect and the past has shown that the ordinary people sent to fight are often left to rot afterwards. I guess it'd be more about fighting off something worse. If there was no way out, the fight instinct would kick in.

That's on the decision making process. The technicalities of it though, you would imagine there are checks and balances in the system, it isn't just a button.

Well yes, you'd certainly hope so.

Not entirely convinced I want to be testing it with Putin of all people however. I'd reckon there's currently more checks and balances in China!

Just a thought? When the generals sit at one end of the table/ meeting areas and Putin sits at the other do we assume that the button is in the middle? Putin does not trust them for some reason.

There is no button. Certainly not in the middle of a table.

Putin makes the decision, but can't actually initiate the launch himself. That's down to the military.

As for his big long tables, he's totally paranoid about Covid and doesn't like to sit near people.

Zelensky’s call for no fly zone rejected

VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY'S call for an immediate no fly zone over Ukraine has been rejected as "understandable yet foolish" because it would "increase the prospect of nuclear conflict".

I dunno, FIFA is pretty huge worldwide, blocking someone from a game like that is the same as banning from the Olympics or whatever these days. It’s all designed to isolate every day Russians and turn them against the regime really.

The Compare the Market thing was 100% PR though.

He has to be ill doesn’t he?

I’d read a quote from someone close to the American intelligence a few days ago saying something along the lines of ‘We can’t expect this Putin to be able to make the same rational decisions as he did 5 years ago’ which was basically intimating he wasn’t well but as much as I’ve googled it I can’t for the life of me find it again.

Would definitely make sense though.

In fairness I have absolutely no time for Grendel whatsoever, but some of his comments about the off topic chat are correct.

I'm seeing people get up in arms about the whole 'pray for' stuff, but turn a blind eye when it has gone on during various cultural talking points that politically side with them. It's virtue signalling here, but ignored over there.

I'm hoping this thread will pull people out of the echo chamber a little bit cause it's also pretty sad that many of those posting with said mindset are already saying they would run a mile if the Russians invaded us.
