Read this earlier which is at least a little bit more reassuring ie at the moment a madman can’t just say ‘press the button’. Although lets hope the doctrine isn’t currently being updated on Putins Commodore 64

Given the kind of absolute horseshit they've been relying on to justify going into Ukraine and putting the nukes on standby, I wouldn't have to much faith in 'reliable information'.

Also supposed to be reliable information about ballistic missiles and they can do pre-emptive nuclear strikes. Not exactly a high bar to whack out some world-end hardware. And given their propensity for 'false flags' it's more than possible they'd launch an attack on somewhere like Belarus themselves and claim it was Ukraine to meet the criteria.

This doesn't fill me with reassurance I'm afraid.

Talks back on apparently.
In the UN Russia again asks Ukrainian army to remove their Govt. Have they not noticed how hard these people are fighting this invasion?

I can think of an army that ought to be thinking about overthrowing their government and it isn’t in Ukraine.

Hungarian news reporting that Russian demands in this meeting today include NATO resetting to its 1997 levels - ie no Poland, former Czech Republic, Hungary,Bulgaria , former Yugoslavia states, Baltic states and a few others.

Not sure that's within Ukraine's authority to do. So it's about sending a bigger message to the rest of the world

Haha ! It’s a grubby job

The fact is surely us and other European nations (all nato) providing lethal military weapons to Ukraine inc 100s of anti tank and ground to air missiles is far worse than condoning a relatively small number of unequipped ex military/civilians going to fight off their own bats ?!

Typical Russian nonsense trying to justify a totally unacceptable escalation in rhetoric and cause divisions.

What makes them think that in the current situation that has any likelihood of happening?

Do they think the likes of Poland will be happy to be kicked out given what's happened to it's neighbour who isn't in NATO? And given they have a say in NATO why would they vote themselves out? It's utter lunacy that can only have come from Putin's fevered mind.

They've officially applied to join but don't meet the normal standard. Probably puts EU leadership in an awkward position

Fwiw, my ten-bob theory on why it's not going well for Russia is this:

Putin, like all dictators, has got rid of (or scared off) anyone who tells him uncomfortable truths.

The net result is that his army is not as efficient as he believed. You can probably put some of that down to simple corruption and disorganisation, and some of it as lack of morale (a lot of Russian soldiers will struggle to see Ukrainians as enemies, I suspect).

Conversely, I think he genuinely believed that a substantial number of Ukrainians would be happy to be 'liberated', and therefore resistance wouldn't be as strong as it is.

And last, and perhaps not without some prior evidence, he thought the West would be weak and divided. And largely, for once, it isn't.

I don't think there's much doubt that Russia could overwhelm Ukraine militarily, but the more brutal the campaign, the stronger the resistance afterwards.

Taking Ukraine and holding Ukraine are not the same thing.

As the casualties mount and the economy tanks, I suspect regime change from within might be the most likely outcome. At least I hope so, for the sake of the Russians as well as the Ukrainians.

IIHF (ice hockey) meeting this afternoon and under a lot of pressure from their members to kick Russia out. Putin is known to be an ice hockey far and its a popular sport over there so needs to be done.

Some good points made by people above, it reminds me of the Simpsons when all of Mr Burn´s lawyers are too scared to tell him anything negative and they all just stand there like nodding dogs. Putin is Mr Burns!

Sport sanctios can be powerful. I saw an interview with someone who was explaining how sporting and cultural sanctions can turn a populace against a leader as it shows just how isolated they now are.

When the Olympics is on, there is a zero tolerance for war. One of the main reasons why the ancient Olympics first came about.

Probably the build up, when the Olympics was on, has annoyed the committee.

TBF to Truss on this occasion I don’t think she’s said anything wrong really. Stupid but not wrong. I think in reality this statement from Russia is very deliberately worded to hit an easy target with no effort.

Why would you make it harder for them in these circumstances? We can all get to the CBS but it would be easier for some to go by rail or bus.

Surely any leader with any integrity would be doing all they could to help the people of Ukraine not put barriers in the any.
