Just a coincidence then that after holding it for 6 months or so they had to withdraw just as the US withdrew intelligence and support.

And that US support resumes again just as Ukraine retreats.

It doesn’t sound as though these Ukrainian solders would agree with you - Retreat from Kursk: Ukrainian troops tell of catastrophe and panic

As has been mentioned before on the likes of the BBC, it also alludes to the soldiers being led by the clueless. The whole operation was just pointless.

Sounds like they do actually!

Volodymyr said it was possible to travel on that road relatively safely a month ago. By 9 March it was "all under the fire control of the enemy".

Depends how and why they are deployed, prior to WWII the cabinet post now called the Minister of Defence was the Secretary of State for War a more honest title. The 1940 Churchill cabinet first used the title Minister for Defence.

Well, having a bit of a problem with nasty Germans dropping bombs on our cities it became clear that we may need to defend our land at some point. Any treaty with the Nazis would have delayed their invasion. 5 years down the line we’d have been invaded.

They’d been on a hiding to nothing way before the Americans withdrew the intelligence. It’s not like they had a strong foothold and then lost it within a week. If you believe that you’ll believe anything.

"We have all the logistics here on one Sudzha-Sumy highway. And everyone knew that the [Russians] would try to cut it. But this again came as a surprise to our command."

Maybe they were also in charge of the infamous counteroffensive. IMO, it achieved absolutely nothing and along with the rest of the war, was a needless waste of life.

No one is claiming it to be a roaring success. But it absolutely served a purpose – it took up to 100k Russian troops away from the front line - and would have served an even greater purpose had Trump not got involved.

They were already on a hiding to nothing before Trump got involved.

In WWI the first bombs were dropped on the UK were by Zeppelins with small payloads and the first raid was in 1915. So conscription then was nowt to do with a threat to Britain.

Actually there was a lot of pre war invasion hysteria whipped up by the press and in popular novels by William Le Quex and Erskine Childers for example, the latter made into a film in the 1970s called The Riddle of the Sands (a spy adventure which is on youtube).

Prior to WWII the British government started a large rearmament program including building 'shadow' factories to construct military aircraft. The site at Ryton being one example. All this happened well before the start of hostilities.

The National Service Act 1939 was enacted in Sept 1939 before any German bombing campaign and the German invasion of France. It superseded an act of May 1939 which conscripted men to military training.

Nothing to do with bombs or a potential invasion of Britain, there was a build up to war which is what Starmer seems to be promoting as he keeps talking about escalating matters by sending British troops to Ukraine, he has already increased the defence budget. Starmer's actions seem to me aimed at scuppering the peace initiatives as much as anything else.

History seems to me to be repeating itself, fuck your principles you really don't want a war I can assure you, resist in every way you can. I certainly shall.

The build up to war was once we woke up to the rise of Hitler. They were a tad pissed off at the time. Mainly due to the terms of the armistice. Then on to our appeasing Germany. It’s annexing of countries etc. spot the pattern.
Putin has been at war with the west for many years. It’s that fool Trump that is also our problem.

Putin has not been 'at war' with the west.

I guess you're one of those people that believes whatever the BBC tells you without question.

Oh come on, not so covert operations in the UK, influencing elections/destabilizing countries/ financing other wars (Like the west does), Killing people, Hacking, There are less subtle ways of fighting wars of course. Maybe do your research? The world is bigger than the things churned out on the BBC.

Sounds like an American woman I got into an argument with at a bar here over the weekend. (Awaits comments about how it never happened!)

Apparently because I wanted the war to stop I was asking for world war 3, because I didn't know my history and it was a replica of world war 2. Then after she said the whole world should get involved to stop Russia, I asked her if she was up for going to fight in Ukraine and she called me a Putin supporter!

This very apt and very good timing after you posted official Russian government propaganda earlier.

That fucking idiot MTG is as bad as you, nice to see her get shut down.

It would be a million times worse, them clowns would push the world to the brink. Instead we’ve now got talks between the 2 most powerful countries on the planet and hopefully common sense prevails.

No, we've got the leader of the the supposedly most powerful nation in the world being played for the fool he is is by a megalomaniac psychopath.

Whatever happens, it will fail.

Less likely is that Trump or someone around him realises they're getting played (at some point Trump will likely feel he's been slighted as he falls out with everyone eventually because he's a child when he doesn't get his own way) and the rhetoric and threats that he and Putin will throw at each other will be far bigger than anything gone before.

Far more likely is Trump ends up giving Putin at least most of what he wants and Putin just starts again in a few years time because no-one has stopped him.

So after a two hour call Putin rejected the 30 day ceasefire. I'm sure peace maker Donald was furious.

They arranged some ice hockey games though, so that's good I guess.

Slight problem of Russia being banned from international competition by the IIHF. Not sure many NHL players will be signing up to play if its going to put their chance at a spot on the Olympic team in jeopardy. If it happens, and I would doubt it, will end up being like the rebel England tours of South Africa during apartheid.

Its widely acknowledged they are. Plenty of American players who have played there talk about their shock about how open steroid use was in locker rooms there.

There has been an element of "softening up" in relation to the potential need for conscription.

Plenty of potential prime squatty candidates which won't cost all that much extra:-

Number of young people not in work or education hits 11-year high

The latest figure of 987,000 16-24-year-olds not in work, education or training has risen by 110,000 in a year.
