I bet they don't, unless they're part of the minority.

The Russian public have been around 70% in favour of the war.

No it wasn't, and they only had to withdraw because of Trump's actions. They'd still be there without that orange prick.

It was completely and utterly pointless and achieved nothing.

Well it would have achieved leverage, but Trump took that away of course.

But it also drew 50k Russian troops away from the front line.

Germany didn't invade the UK in 1939 but we still went to war with them

They couldn't hold it because your hero is beholden to Putin.

Was pointless even attempting it. Resources could have been used elsewhere

They were on the back foot before last week and Russia were also advancing elsewhere. It achieved nothing and was pointless.

Just a coincidence then that after holding it for 6 months or so they had to withdraw just as the US withdrew intelligence and support.

And that US support resumes again just as Ukraine retreats.

Kind of inevitable in a war really. Not that I think a war will happen. But if it does, yeah.

Depends how and why they are deployed, prior to WWII the cabinet post now called the Minister of Defence was the Secretary of State for War a more honest title. The 1940 Churchill cabinet first used the title Minister for Defence.

You are too old for the draft I presume.

I am not a pacifist but most of the military actions taken by the UK government can hardly be called defence.

Observation in recent war zones, eg Bosnia are deployments which are more neutral in nature.

Yeah I am. Kids aren’t tho so not entirely selfish. This is specifically talking about an (extremely unlikely IMO) scenario where we are invaded.

If conscription is used it is naive in the extreme to think the public will have any say on where deployments occur and that they would be limited to actions in the UK.

Why do you think UK media is promoting this story? What's it really all about.

Because it gets clicks same reason they do everything. This isn’t 1972 where the press and the government work in concert.

Conscription to fight a war which currently at least is nothing to do with us. Fuck right off. Sick of us meddling in foreign affairs. Concentrate on internal security.

Well if conscription happened, which it isn't going to, it would be for internal security.

Reuters saying Russia won't accept the ceasefire. But but they want peace!

Both sides have such strong red lines, it's hard to see anything concrete being agreed.

100%. It's virtually impossible without some movement from someone. Ukraine won't budge, its their country after all and Russia can't lose face

Why would you think that, the 2 times it happened in the past were WWI and WWII (though National Service as it was termed continued till the 1960s and conscripts were sent to Korea and the Suez debacle in the 1950's) neither of which involved infantry action in the UK (bar the uncontested occupation of the Channel Isles).
