I doubt it. It is surprising to me that the Ukrainian force hasn’t been quickly expelled though.

Putin has already been to Iran and North Korea with his begging bowl for equipment. There’s been Iranian troops in Crimea since 2022 in “support rolls” and the Russian/North Korea strategic partnership treaty signed a couple of months ago does apparently open the door for North Korean troops to fight for Russia in Ukraine according to US military intelligence. Between Putin and Kim Jong Un and how unstable they both are you really couldn’t write of North Korea entering the arena with troops on the ground.

It’s an intriguing situation. Ukraine has deployed a highly mobile force into Russia - and we shouldn’t get carried away, 15 km into Russia is nothing. It would like trying crush Birmingham by seizing Meridian. So Ukraine is seeking something else, even if it’s trying to alleviate the pressure elsewhere.
Whatever, Nazi Russia is embarrassed and even that is an achievement.
I am more interested in the increase in attacks on the illegally occupied Crimea. Because the Russian offensives are running out of steam.

Ukraine is not going to take Moscow, they have to win by other means, and this makes the Russians look silly and stretches their forces.

Land to bargain with, people to trade and a poke in the eye for Russia.

Genuine question, what kind of force would be needed to take Kursk?

There's no evidence the Russians have transferred forces from other combat zones though, and Russian advances have picked up pace if anything in Donbass.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainians have cobbled up a total of 1 heavy brigade for this escapade, with a mish-mash of armoured vehicles. It appears that the Ukrainian advances have stopped now and we will probably see them pushed out of Kursk Oblast over the next few weeks.

I wouldn't be surprised if they attempt another border raid or even another offense in the South. Tbf to Ukraine they have been written off by many who (including myself) didn't expect such a well planned assault.

That said, any similar moves are likely to fail, as did the latest attempt to land forces on the Kinburn Spit yesterday.

Probably about 10x what Ukraine committed to this op at least.

Realistically though, I think if Ukraine got close to capturing Kursk NPP they would get glassed

Ffs Tony, he didn't go there with a begging bowl, he went to offer them weapons.
He's doing exactly what he told us he'd do, arm the enemies of the west.

Honestly, it's incredible that Putin tells every fucker what he's planning and yet some completely different narrative somehow miraculously makes its way into the mainstream media.

I don't think it's been reported anywhere that he's gone begging?

Bit of both really. Putin needed ammunition (esp artillery), North Korea needs... well everything really, but petrol, food, and technology is what Russia is likely providing.

North Korean troops in Europe though, not sure about that.

I suspect the glorious leader, Kim, would worry about them defecting or deserting en masse as soon as they got near a European border.

Russia and North Korea: what can they do for each other?

From the FT

Ukraine is pulling troops from the East for this adventure. Basically admitting the east is lost.

Judging by the resistance they've faced so far, about 8 blokes and a couple of air rifles should do it.

Nothing has happened that's anywhere close to reaching the threshold for Russia to use nuclear weapons so far. In the event that Ukraine captures a Russian NPP, and likely the tactical nuclear weapons storage facility also within Kursk Oblast is a different matter though.

They aren't going to use nukes. There are no red lines, despite what they keep saying.

This is an interesting article. Looks like Ukraine were planning on attacking the navy day parade, given Putin was attending it was likely going to be an assassination attempt.

The US were so worried about it they stepped in and told Ukraine to cancel the op.

Not sure why they would tell Ukraine to stop it, considering Russia doesnt have any red lines so surely killing Putin would be fine?

Zaparozhe NPP on fire.

Zelensky is accusing Russia of setting it on fire, Russia accuses Ukr of hitting it with a drone.

It wouldn't be the first time Ukr has hit the NPP if this is the case. The cooling towers are a little way from the reactors so hopefully this won't escalate into chernobyl 2.0 but this is pretty fucked up.

I wonder why Putin ordered the evacuation of 76,000 Kursk residents. Almost as if he thought something really bad was going to happen in the area.

Seems Russia set a load of car tyres on fire. Presumably to be used as 'justification' for some impending bombing of a hospital or supermarket or something. Classic false flag if so.

They evacuated from the border area which has become a combat zone, I don't find that to be a surprising move, the Ukrainians did the same on their side of the border.

The reactors are switched off anyway and the plant is now reporting that the fire has been contained.

Putler must be raging that he isn't going to be able to use this false flag to blackmail the west.
