It would be far from over. It would just have been a different type of war. A guerrilla war of resistance. Longer and bloodier. Ukraine is a nation that was never going to bend from day one and that was evident on day one when house wives were confronting Russian soldiers in the streets, telling them to go home to their mothers, there’s only death for you here, putting seeds in their pockets telling them that it’s so flowers will grow from their corpse. Whole communities coming together to make Molotov cocktails on an industrial scale. Ukrainian men in their 50’s and 60’s who served in the army of the Soviet Union volunteering to join the Ukrainian army to fight their former comrades. Hordes and hordes of young Ukrainians living and working in other European countries rushing back to Ukraine to fight Russians once they’d emptied every army surplus store on the journey. I think you’ve forgotten the early days and weeks of the invasion. No one was rolling over to get their tummies tickled, no one was cheering them on the road to Kyiv throwing flowers at the feet of Russian soldiers.

Quick question for you. How long did the Irish fight the British for their own sovereignty before leading to the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922?
I’ll give you a clue. Wolfe Tone died in 1798.

The Ukrainians like the Irish are fighting for essentially the same cause, sovereignty from a neighbouring country. Second question. Given the determination of the Ukrainians from day one why do you seem to suppose that they would do anything other than fight and continue to fight even if Kyiv fell?

The quickest way to bring this to a close is by supporting Ukraine.
