Puts another dent in Putin's reputation at home too, which can't hurt.

Perhaps discourages travel in general across the bridge too, I certainly wouldn't fancy it knowing that it's constantly at risk of attack...

They’re telling tourists to use the land bridge through occupied Ukraine

I’ve had some crappy family holiday drives before but that would take the biscuit.

Fair point. Still reckon I'd take it over the M5 to Cornwall when the kids break up.

I remember as a kid is driving to catch the ferry at Belfast when it was a particularly bad summer for sectarian violence and riots in Northern Ireland. The advice from the police was stay away from Belfast if possible and if you have to drive through Belfast make sure all your doors are locked and don’t stop at traffic lights because people were being forced out of their cars so the cars could be set up as barriers and set alight. That was a fun journey. We got to the ferry okay which was a night sailing and as the ship was getting ready to depart I vividly remember standing on the deck looking out at Belfast and just seeing huge fires everywhere.

In Russia you get sacked for shooting down a civilian airliner carrying 300 people, but arrested for saying mean things about Dear Leader.

Perfectly normal country.

Russia arrests pro-war Putin critic Igor Girkin, according to reports

FSB agents come to Girkin’s home and escort him away ‘in an unknown direction’

So. Russia v Poland. And…..

Putin puppet says Russia 'ready to wage war with Turkey' over Black Sea

Russian state media, which is strictly controlled by the Kremlin, is used in part as a tool to overplay Vladimir Putin's global influence to its civilian viewership. The state channels often call on the Russian autocrat to wage war with NATO to mask the reality that such a prospect is not feasible.

Stalemate and it ending around the negotiating table is still the most likely overcome.

That's fine as long as the result of those negotiations is Russia leaving Ukrainian territory.

Until then, no negotiations.

I think you’re over estimating your influence here. In all seriousness, unfortunately it won’t be entirely up to them - the longer it goes on the more pressure there will be for concessions.

They're on the offensive, they aren't going to agree to any negotiation which results in Russia remaining in Ukraine.

The day will come when they have to take stock. Russia is sending canon fodder still. Providing the armoir and ammunition flows from the west, Ukraine will keep going. But, there has to be a point when both sides stop.

I think even if Ukraine "win", Russia will still end up with part of the Donbas.

Yes I agree, and you are right that being supplied by the west is a huge factor, probably the biggest. But until the west stops arming Ukraine then they will keep pushing Russia out.

It might be financially expensive, but at the moment the West is grinding down Russia's military without losing a single soldier.

From a purely cynical point of view, that's no bad thing, imho - Russia's influence globally has to be significantly impacted by this.

I'm not sure if F-16s will make a huge difference, but historically air superiority seemed to be important to a successful conventional offensive action. I guess we'll see when they finally arrive...

Yes absolutely. I said this back in February...

PVA said:
The US have spent something like 2 weeks worth of their annual defence budget on aid and weapons for Ukraine and has practically crippled the Russian army.

It's a fantastic ROI for them, they will keep funding like this for as long as they want/need to.

This may change depending on their election though.

Thing is this drip drip of weapons has just meant it’s dragged out and allowed Russians to dig in. Pretty much everything we’ve said no to we’ve gone back on later. If we’d given it in the first place we might have seen some real gains this summer.

Just watched an excellent documentary on Channel 4 called 'The Price of Truth' about a Russian journalist and Nobel Prize winner. Great insight into Russia and the war in Ukraine. Worth watching on catch up in my view.

Definitely, unequivocally, 100% an accident.
