So we have to make it to the point where even the Russians can't ignore how bad he's made it for them. The annexation of Crimea and involvement in Donbas & Luhansk in 2014 emphasizes this. Prior to these 2 events there was little appetite for NATO membership in Ukraine. These 2 events pushed Ukraine towards NATO but it's only the current invasion that saw Ukrainian public opinion finally sway towards backing NATO membership.
