How do you define “western soil”?

Ukrainian is a democratic European country. Is that not a western country?

Which makes even less sense because he’s green lighting Russia invading Ireland for example.

Because that's really likely

Looking at the losses the Russians are still having inflicted on them and the age of the equipment they are having to ready someone should teach Putin about Pyrrhus of Epirus.

Clearly not but Ireland isn’t the only European country that isn’t a NATO member.

Of course not but Putin wouldn't be interested in any that wasn't a part of the former Soviet Union

A 'win' would be forcing Russian troops out of Ukraine. That's pretty obvious. Sadly that's going to take a long time and result in an awful lot of casualties for both sides.

Makes sense but Zelensky seems pretty adament that he won't give up any land, which is what this is all about. I think realistically he'll need to be convinced that we can't prop him up forever and, to give Putin some kind of face saving, he may have to concede the East? Perhaps not a case of who blinks first but who has the mental will to keep going. The Russian public seem brainwashed by the state, would they put up with hardship longer than the rest of Europe? Cost of living, petrol, energy ... and we're not as reliant as some countries. Perhaps find a loophole for Zelensky saying if he signs the dombas over, and without an internal conflict in Ukraine, they can apply for NATO membership and at least have some proper protection in future.

The ultimate question is “what does a win ln this war look like” - so what is it?

Also the observations and comments regarding what needs doing by @Evo1883 are spot on and shine out against the dick waving nonsense that dominates this thread

So basically Ukraine is right in wanting to join the EU and NATO. There’s much smaller ex soviet countries who have done that and he’s not invading them.

Putin is clearly trying to goad the west into conflict.

I'm certain the man is very seriously ill, possibly terminally.

Negotiating peace is a two-way thing. And Putin seems to be clear that Ukraine under Russian control is the only thing he will accept. If he gets that he then just invades the next place and do we just keep on negotiating peace by giving him what he wants as he expands further and further?

It's the Neville Chamberlain argument. "You had a choice between dishonour and war. You chose dishonour and you shall have war."

At some point , when people are struggling to pay for food and their bills are even more ridiculous .. they will become angry at their leaders for continuing to plow billions into a foreign war thats helping cause it .. we arent at that point yet .. it's what I'm getting at really.

What do you think happens if we don't plow money into that war? Putin gets control of a huge amount of agricultural land and supply, which he can then weaponise by cutting the amount sent to other nation and/or to feed his own people. So prices here could well be worse than they are now. Or do we just start bowing down to Putin to keep the bread coming over?

If Putin enters western soil clearly then. Frankly though by then he’s armies depleted and exhausted so really it’s not happening

I answered it. Ukraine on its own isn’t abs never will be worth shedding a single uk life for.

A settlement needs to be agreed at some point and the west needs to be honest. It will not ever support Ukraine but it should look to broker a deal to surrender land to Russia and force a peace of sorts through diplomacy
Given the potential food crisis and how much of that comes from the region this may well end up affecting us a lot.

As for a settlement, any deal to surrender land will just embolden Putin, he will send his 'separatists' further in and displace the local population until such time as apparently it wants to secede. And we're back where we started just a bit further in and that 'diplomatic peace' is proven to be nothing but a sham. "Peace in our time."

I sure as hell don't want a full on war, but I'm also not naive enough to think Putin will ever stop. History is filled with warnings of others with his mindset and that is always what happens until they're stopped.

Of course he will stop. He has an outdated military - his mindset isn’t world domination - it’s a mindset of taking a land he thinks is russias - you overblow his threat - unless we decide to bomb Russia

According to all the front line action clips on YouTube, you'd be forgiven for thinking Russia must have no men of fighting age left in the whole country!

And to think Ukraine have nearly 1million trained fighting age men ready to go at the end of the month, if they get the weapons they require I think it will be a very very high death toll but Ukraine victory by end of summer

I hate to say it, but I think the west will drip feed only enough military hardware to keep Ukrain in the fight. It suits NATO (the Americans mainly) to see Russia worn down both militarily and financially, and that requires a long war of attrician which will mean multi million dollar arms contracts. Which will benefit western economies during a time of recession.
(Ironically a recession partly caused by the same war) it's a fucked up world we live in.

Good post. The US always likes a war at a time of recession.
