All very true. But the right to 'bear arms' is enshrined in the US constitution.
To change the consitution requires a 2/3 majority of the entire elected federal government or of the 50 states. This is extremely difficult to achieve.
The other problem is the NRA gun lobby which will ensure that any politician campaigning on a gun control platform will be voted out of office or not elected.
The majority of the US public actually want sensible gun control legislation.

That's probably the key. Always going to be gun ownership but implementing "common sense" safeguards too often blocked by vested interests.
