I do not contribute as much as I should to this site, but I feel people are a tad unfair to Waghorn. Almost to a person, on this site, Waghorn is a liability and most people want him gone. I have always rated him and think people should encourage him, as the away fans do, and get off his back.
He has had a glowing career and I think for Championship level he is up there with the likes of Billy Sharp and Weissman. Wherever he has played he has always had good rapport with the fans. Possibly because of his age he cannot perform at the high level people associate with him and that happens to the best of them like Ronaldo at Man Utd.
We only see players for 90 minutes per week but MR and his team see them all week. MR, and his team, are quite good at judging player's characters and i believe Waghorn does a lot of coaching with Vik and now Fabio. Last season I watched the contact Vik had with Godden, and Vik had with Waghorn and i believe Vik prefers playing alongside Waghorn because of him movement and off the ball contribution. Godden is a poacher and all good forwards are selfish, which Godden certainly is. Waghorn is less so and although he is not prolific with goals he is a good 'partner' to play off.
Although, everyone has the right to their opinion i think people should trust MR with Waghorn and get behind the guy.

I think he is a good player. I think he iis still part of Robins plans for this year. Although if another club wanted him Robins may see his wage as an opportunity to stir the pot?

He desperately needs a couple of goals though. Whenever I have seen him his contribution to the side is good and he has always looked like he has a goal in him..

Hey Martyn.

Jokes.

I'm with you in as much as I like and I think he offers a decent option up top. He's not going to get 20 goals a season like Gyo or Godden could but there's no doubt that him and Gyo had a good partnership last season before he got injured.

Defo a good 3rd choice behind Gyo and Godden but in certain circumstances, him up top with Gyo would be preferable to Gooden up top with Gyo.

Don't know much about Weissman but I don't think the comparison with Sharp is accurate. Always seemed to get a decent amount of goals.

I honestly haven't seen enough of him to make a fair assessment. I dont think anyone has except Robins and the coaching team.

Had being entirely right. He's never been a goalscorer like Sharp, so the comparison is somewhat tenuous. As for longeivity, it depends how the rest of his game is. His last season with Derby was decline, last season with us was further decline. That doesn't of course mean he can't reverse that, but the omens are not good as he's now at an age where it gets progressively harder to do so.

I rate Waghorn, but this spell has most certainly not worked out for either party, its time for him to move on. The reason for most the criticism is the massive wage whilst contributing nothing for what a Striker should 1 goal, if he was an AM then it would be a different story. But he is a Striker that has scored 1 goal on 375k pw

That's rather unfair. Could quite as easily be a cousin or next door neighbour.

I was delighted when he came… so I agree with a good chunk of this. He hasn’t had the best of luck and does deserve our support.

Did I do good Uncle Martyn?

Hi Martyn,

I found your signing for us questionable at the time and haven't seen much yet to prove otherwise.

Please continue to work hard in training and maybe you can prove me and many others wrong.

Kind regards.

I like him. He’s got quality but he’s not a striker in a million years.

Not sure if he ever was a pacey player, but he definitely hasn't got any now to play in that striker position.
Sometimes last year, he'd receive the ball and didn't have any acceleration to run at goal.

Still good on the ball though. If he stays, it should be in a second striker/backup (until O'Hare is back) number 10 role imo

Football is a game of fine margins. Sometimes small decisions have lasting impacts. I remember walking away from Barnsley last season, possibly the most frustrated I have ever been as we played them off the park and they kicked lumps out of us for about 80 minutes of the game. We get a pen in the last minute. I think every one wanted Waghorn to take it. Vik, when many were still unimpressed by his permanent signing, stepped up and missed a very tame penalty. At that point in time, I don't think anyone called have envisaged just how much of a fan favourite Vik would go on to be. Had Waghorn stepped up and put that pen away, he *may* have got some early confidence and put a run together. He most certainly would have endeared himself more to many of the fans currently giving him way too much abuse. I personally feel like he has done fine when he has played, not outstanding, but fine. He is clearly an able footballer but he does look goal shy which is of course a problem when you play in his position.

No he’s not - he’s had a far more successful career than most of our squad.

We obviously did very well with Gyokeres and Waghorn up front in the early part of the season.

But his goal return was just not good enough, we need more goals from a starting striker than he was offering.

My main criticism in the second half of the season, and maybe this was a result of lack of confidence, is that every time the ball was played into him he'd do a one touch layoff backwards. There was never an intent to turn on the ball, to drive into the space, it was always a simple layoff.

He was writing in the present tense. It's really odd how much you rate Waghorn so highly with his one goal but don't rate Godden.

I do rate Godden - I just don’t think he’s a 25-30 a season Championship goalscorer, as gets claimed on here.

Weissman I believe had a spell at Derby? Now with Bristol City. The comparison with Sharp I think is not wrong. Sheffield united went up to the premier league and many players were playing at a level which was above them, including McGoldrick, Fleck, Sharp and many others. they perform the first season with really gusto but were found out the second season They were not premier players as when they were relegated no one came in to buy them. I think Waghorn's career has been very similar to Sharp, but Sharp has scored more goals.

At the moment know one really cares about being “unfair” to a player. Especially when Wasps, Council and CWG are being unfair to the club.
