Knocked his dad out in the player's lounge.

Also on about his foot through the shop window.

I was talking about this to someone awhile ago. Whelan was such a gifted footballer. Couldn’t wait to watch him live during that time.

I heard the reason Leeds finally lost patience with him was because he hit his mum in public on a night out.

He was one of those who first made me fall in love with City as a kid

Whelan, Huckerby, Dublin, McAllister, Boateng then of course Keane, Hadji Kirkland..

I heard that there was an unannounced drug test visit to Leeds and he was high on pot so Wilkinson sent him away for a few days, no idea if true though. What a player he was, would maybe have been close to playing for England without his regular moments of madness

Those names were so exciting after years of garbage after the 87 side, but I would say there is player missing and it’s not Robert Jarni

I would add Roland Nilsson to saddles list as he was beautiful to watch.

But in between the 87 and Strachan teams I had forgotten about the most naturally talented player I have seen in a city shirt Peter Ndlovu.

Completely right that he should have gone on to big things. Whelan was a stupendous player, but didn't have the maturity to deal with life with money and a degree of fame. Leeds would never have sold him if he had had.

It was probably the wrong era for him; big money and exposure starting to wash around in the sport, but it'd still not moved on from the big drinking culture.

You can find a slightly longer version of that on YouTube where he talks about a trip to the cinema. Incredible stuff.

A player who never scored a bad goal , so naturally talented but so unwilling to grow up .
Scored one of my favourite ever city goals on a frosty pitch Vs Southampton (??) he dribbled from the halfway line beating 5-6 players before slotting it away . All while wearing AstroTurf trainers

One of my best mates is Leeds through & through, season ticket holder for many years, he’s always maintained that McAllister was a great player but they understood his reasons for leaving.
Noel Whelan on the other hand not so much.
Great player with unbelievable ability who I used to enjoy watching play football .
Remember being all excited for the new season only for him to injure himself kicking in a shop window.

Whelan should have played for England imo. He had everything, apart from off field dedication.

he makes hamers love affair with fizzy moon look low level!

was in vicinity night he put foot through window - by all accounts was so so so close to ending career.

should also say what a top lad he was always talking to and happy to talk football when out over a beer.

He was definitely talented enough to play for England.

Not sure it is covered in the podcast, but Strachan made him move in with him to try to keep a closer eye on him.

At the Edinburgh Fringe a couple of years go I attended an audience with WGS. I asked about Whelan and he said that he would have gone to jail if he hadn’t agreed for Whelan to live with him. While he was there Noel asked if he could go round to Telfers house to watch a video and Gordon agreed. Gordon then took his family to the cinema and who should be there with his arm around a girl, yep our Noel.
