Russia have been given a suspended points deduction in the wake of supporter unrest during their opening Euro 2012 game after UEFA got tough over the behaviour of their fans.

The national football team will now spend the next three-and-a-half years playing under the threat of a six-point deduction for their 2016 European Championship qualifying campaign.

A fine of €120,000 (£96,761) was also handed to the Russian Football Union for the "improper conduct" of their supporters during the match against Czech Republic on Friday.

UEFA said in a statement on Wednesday: "The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has today decided to impose a deduction of six points on the Football Union of Russia (RFS) in the qualifying round of the next UEFA European Football Championship.

"This decision is suspended for a probationary period running from now until the end of the play-offs of the next UEFA European Football Championship (UEFA Euro 2016).

"The Football Union of Russia (RFS) has also been fined €120,000.

"The RFS was facing charges for the improper conduct of its supporters (crowd disturbances), the setting off and throwing of fireworks and the display of illicit banners at last Friday's UEFA Euro 2012 Group A match against the Czech Republic in Wroclaw.

"An appeal can be lodged against this decision within three days of the dispatch of the written decision."

Glad to see them cracking down on morons that fight, but shouldn't Poland be charged too?

Fine was fair, but should go for Polska as well. I for one can't stand hooligans and the tribal idiocy of it all. Politics aside, man up.

I suspect that even if any English hooligans had travelled they wouldn't fancy taking on these nutters

Reading the article it relates to Fridays game against the Czech Republic so expect more following yesterdays awful behaviour ,given the history that was inflamatory of them ,trying to to have a Russia day march and then that banner in the ground"THis is Russia ",bang out of order.
