Keeper’s entitled to go for it, but Hanley shoves him in that direction.

Never a pen for me either. Armstrong basically gave up trying to score and just looked for the pen instead.

I don't know that he gave up to be honest, but he definitely tried to turn the defender, which was a really daft thing to do, as he seemed favourite to get there first

Never, ever a penalty.

Really is a pathetic showing. Hungary really aren’t a very good team at all, to not even be able to offer any sort of attacking threat in a must win game against them is absolutely dire.

Hanley pushing him into the keeper.

Could well be a serious neck injury the way the keeper was flying the opposite way.

This combined with the specific type of posture he displayed afterwards is a real concern

Any good news at all is welcome here

If Scotland weren't so mental about hating England I wouldn't care if the lost, but they are and it was funny as fuck.

I am a Scotland supporter and tbh I never expected we would qualify, basically a Championship standard of player representing Scotland these days...with the exception of John McGinn who I think is a terrific midfielder.
Good luck to England moving forward,I genuinely hope they do well.

Pen call was weird, looked like Armstrong almost jumped into defender as he tried to get across him. Didn’t need to, just shield ball/do a vardy and he’d probably have got the pen or a shot off

Maybe he could ask why his player slowed his run. Stepped across and pulled the defenders shirt. Rather than trying to shot.

Maybe it was because he knew he wasn't going to control it

Yeah, mad wasn't it. I have no idea why he did that.

I was expecting the ref to give a penalty though. If he had, I don't think VAR would have overturned it.

100% a penalty for me. Armstrong was played in, so he was in possession of the ball and has every right to shield it from the defender, in fact, that’s good striker play. It’s for the defender to find a legitimate way to block. His leg hits his calf and he goes down, maybe easily but it’s a penalty all day. If that’s Kane we’d all scream penalty!

Guessing Armstrong is right footed, at first I thought he was just awkwardly shifting to get it on his right. Deffo looking for it.

McGinn, McTominay and Robinson are the 3 players whose premier league experience puts them ahead of there teammates, I think McGinn and Robinson have disappointed with only McTominay coming out with any credit.

*Robertson had been disappointing overall, thought McGinn was very good last night to be fair.
I do find the vitriol on this thread towards Scots a bit odd considering we live in a City with a significant proportion of people of Scottish descent like myself..plus of course a large number of Irish, west Indian and Indian sub continent descent.
I shall be hoping England find the improvement required to progress further in the competition and that Ireland's gift to England (Kane) finds his scoring boots.

They gave it a good go in the 2 games but ultimately not good enough. They lost before they entered the pitch against Germany. Fearful from the off and showed them too much respect.

If it was a defender flying through the air like that it would be a foul.

The defender looks to nudge him into the keeper who's flying out.

Was more of a pen than anything else.

It's ridiculous the leeway that keepers get. As you say, any other player makes an out of control challenge, even if they get the ball, and they're off. But touch the keeper and it's a foul!

Completely reckless by Gunn charging into a group of players.

If the keeper had just stood on his line and let the attacker score everyone would be saying why didn't he come out and clear it, I don't think he was out of control, it was certainly no Schumacher on Battiston challenge.

He's not entitled to shield the ball from the defender by putting his arm across his chest and pushing him backwards. The first offence was obstruction. Indirect free kick to Hungary.
Would have been easier to score, though admittedly not as clear-cut a chance as that clown Petkovic for Croatia v Spain, which was an utter comedy of errors (and never a pen - no contact whatsoever).
Fuck 'em - that game was Sunday league at best, and Scotland can't even claim to have one or two players, in an otherwise poor team, who would grace the world stage like they have in times past (Hansen, Strachan, Macallister, et al).

First viewing I thought definite pen. On replay I thought Armstrong had maybe done too much to ‘shield’ ball. If he’d focussed more on trying to get a shot off rather than shield, I think it ends up being a pen all day long or he might even score

Daren’t say that to a Scot’s mate though…bit raw at the moment . Just said he gave the ref/VAR a more complicated decision

There's a difference between challenging for the ball and sprinting out of your goal and leaping into players. I think he committed quite a few of these offences! -

Direct and indirect free kicks and penalty kicks can only be awarded for offences committed when the ball is in play.

1. Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip
If an offence involves contact it is penalised by a direct free kick or penalty kick.
  • Careless is when a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. No disciplinary sanction is needed
  • Reckless is when a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned
  • Using excessive force is when a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent and must be sent off
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences:
  • a handball offence (except for the goalkeeper within their penalty area)
  • holds an opponent
  • impedes an opponent with contact
  • bites or spits at someone on the team lists or a match official
  • throws an object at the ball, opponent or match official, or makes contact with the ball with a held object

Fair enough. I can see your point of view. For me, it’s a foul and a pen. I’d even predict if that exact challenge happens outside of the box, refs would give it.

Maybe

I thought pen all day long on first viewing, but watching the replay, I do feel Armstrong is leaning all.over the defender, so I can see why they just stuck with the on-field call.

The more I watched it, the more I thought no penalty. On first viewing though, definitely looked it.

Latest, apparently, is that Gallagher will be in for TAA.

So, from fantasy world beater, to actual carpet one.

I think Gallagher will be fine for tomorrow actually, but he's not the answer going further forward into the competition.
